Appendix: Survey Results
NOTE: All numerical ratings of our compliance with the Middle States standards, from faculty, students, and parents, are contained in the section of this report looking directly at that issue. Below is the entire collection of comments received in those surveys, as well as the complete results of our initial needs assessment survey.
Comments have been left largely in their original form, and edited only enough to facilitate better readability. Comments that were overtly disparaging to particular individuals have been omitted. The attitudes and opinions conveyed in these comments represent only the positions of the individuals who made them, and are included here so that readers of this report can better understand the range of opinions in the community we serve.
Faculty survey, November, 2006
STANDARD #1: Philosophy/Mission/Beliefs/Objectives
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
I, personally, have not reviewed the Philosophy/Mission/Beliefs/Objectives recently and am unsure of their content. |
While statements are visible on the home page of the district website, we really do not refer to, use, or discuss these statements. They do not guide decision making. New teachers are not informed of their meaning. If they ever had importance, at this point they have lost their significance. |
As a guidance counselor I am interested in knowing what the word diversity means in the following statement. ' We believe diversity strengthens society and should be protected' |
Serving the needs of every student and preparing them for the 21st century. |
Every student matters and is considered a learner. |
Simple and easy to understand; involve powerful and important concepts. |
We believe all students can succeed. |
Belief that students are to be lifelong learners. |
attempt to eliminate discrimination attempt to be all inclusive community involvement support for variety of programs. |
Dedication of administrators, teachers, and support staff to the students. |
Seeks to actively embrace all cultures and ethnicities. |
administrators and school board regularly adhere to these objectives as they develop policy and programs; regular strategic planning process assures review of these objectives |
It covers many areas |
Support from the community in this area Communication about objectives among the administration, teachers, and students |
The vast majority of the school community takes the PMBOs to heart and strive to make SASD a reality of its intended purpose. |
These statements present an optimistic and supportive outlook about the abilities and motivation of our students. |
Teachers participated seriously in their development. |
The school aspires to teach all students. |
This school district encourages and fosters learning for ALL students to help them reach their individual potentials |
Usually statements, objectives, and beliefs are carefully and comprehensively written |
The most important strength is that all of the teachers have the same main objective, to make our students better people in the community and in their lives. |
diverse faculty, a curriculum which is well rounded and provides a variety of opportunities for students and staff, a conducive learning environment which is not too rigid. |
I'd like to see something about personal responsibility in students/citizens. |
Students do not bear enough of the responsibility. |
Basically, global knowledge of them. |
sometimes give mixed messages |
Some scheduling limitations/conflicts. |
Doesn't sufficiently stress high achievement of students. |
there are no significant weaknesses in regards to these objectives |
I don't believe all of the areas the mission statement covers are actually addressed on a regular basis by the school district. One issue in particular is school safety. |
Of course, improvement of the physical plant of the high school would increase morale. |
These statements are somewhat abstract. |
P/M/B/O need more prominent display and promotion. |
More discussion of them could be had. |
NCLB and PSSA 'one size fits all' testing have led to unrealistic expectations for many students, without considering their varied levels of ability, family backgrounds, and serious motivation/interest to succeed in school |
The physical environment at the high school is way below the standards and doesn't fit the philosophy of facilitating learning. The school is in rotten shape and hardly any money is being spent on fixing problems. The air in the building is deteriorating and could be dangerous. The ceiling and walls are falling apart. |
STANDARD #2: Governance and Leadership
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
provision of additional opportunities to students who are not college bound, get students into employment tracks earlier on |
I do not know whether or not the administrative direction considers the district philosophy, etc., but I do believe that they are aware of and intent on implementing best practices for the students. |
there could be better communication with teachers concerning school events |
There has been a significant amount of miscommunication of directions, as well as many changes in past practices without the means or knowledge to execute these changes. |
administrators are fair, flexible, allow teachers to instruct students and are supportive |
The high school has a principal and vice-principal who take their jobs seriously and are supportive of good educational practices. |
Administration allows educators creative freedom within their subject, and exhibits a great level of trust. They do not attempt to control instructional decisions within the classroom or club. They do not feel the need to micro-manage. |
Our Principal (Mr. Messmore) and Asst. Principal (Mr. Longwell) are both very, very good; responsible, hard-working, dedicated, flexible and understanding. Both are good at communicating effectively with staff, students, and the community. |
Equally fair to all students. |
The building principal understands and can articulate goals. His keen awareness of the environment coupled with his use of data gives him a thorough perspective. He is a leader, not just a manager. |
in house leaders support and back our decisions, make sure to get all of the facts before acting |
Administrators have planning sessions and then have curriculum meetings with team leaders at their buildings. |
Our administration is highly involved with the daily operations of the school and the students' well being. |
Solid well informed and knowledgeable administrative staff |
Academic goals are more clearly stated and pursued than in previous administrations. |
the school district maintains competent leadership at all levels |
I think our school district does a particularly good job at alerting parents to the activities of their children with regard to tardiness and absences, as well as providing opportunity for parents to monitor the progress of their child via Internet. |
Generally, we have a very supportive administration here. I feel comfortable going to my administrators with concerns. |
The administrators are accessible and reasonable. |
Administration is accessible and will to discuss issues open-mindedly. |
SAHS administrators are exceptionally skilled and highly dedicated to the improvement of the school. |
The district seems to have an excellent rapport with the parents and community as a whole. |
School district administrators are genuinely interested in our students and providing a quality educational program for all. |
There is some support of school activities and programs - both curricular and extra-curricular. There is much support of all sports programs. |
Each authority figure, including teachers, works together for the greater good of the school and the students. |
We see administration throughout the day interacting with faculty and students. We see the Superintendent in the school often. |
consistent, ask for staff input on a variety of issues, open-minded |
None at this time. |
Some efforts from the district level do not seem to clearly understand the operation, goals and needs of the high school. |
there are no significant weaknesses in regards to these objectives |
There are sometimes long-term goals that are suggested, but little effort is made to set concrete attainable goals. |
I would like to see the head of our school in the classrooms more. |
Sometimes communication is not crystal clear. |
Parent input is not actively sought. |
None. |
More opportunities for communication would be helpful. |
Communication between administrators and staff is sometimes lacking or not timely enough for us to prepare for large projects or things that are due (budgets, Middle States, etc.) Also, VERY little training and TIME provided for staff to learn new technology and programs that have changed frequently and must be used quickly. |
1. There is unfair and unethical treatment of students. Parents have repeatedly mentioned this problem. Some students get better treatment than others. Some get little or no punishment for behavioral offenses, while some get large punishments for the same offenses. Some students are treated abusively or described by negative adjectives to their faces or behind their backs. Students are held out of classes in in-school suspension too often, sometimes for first time offenses that seem too weak to justify denying the child his or her education. Many of these offenses are not committed in the classroom. 2. Male faculty and staff members are favored over the female faculty and staff. 3. Faculty members and/or programs have been put down or insulted in front of faculty and staff members at meetings. 4. Very little positive or encouraging comments are said to faculty or students who accomplish many tasks and notable goals. 5. Not enough support is provided in supervising and executing school programs. 6. Teachers are expected to put in hours of plan writing on the lettergrade computer program without the time given to do it. The program doesn't function correctly so it is unavailable to many faculty when it is needed. 7. Money has been loaded into a new stadium while the high school building is falling apart. |

interacting with staff on a more consistent basis |
STANDARD #3: Organizational Design and Staff
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
Staff development programs are not developed following needs assessment with appropriate input from school personnel in planning and evaluating the programs. |
We do not have enough staff for tech support. |
more direction is needed for attendance procedures and assemblies and other events. |
Technology department is understaffed |
Staff development programs provided directly by the district often seem motivated by what is currently available, rather than by the needs dictated by the school and/or its long-range plan. |
District leadership does not support a comprehensive program of professional development for all staff that addresses district-wide expectations and needs by allocating time and resources. |
Two technology staff members for a) the district network and b) for every computer in four buildings is simply not enough! |
Suitable direction comes primarily from the building administration. Central office direction does not seem as clearly focused or well-thought out. With such a stable teaching staff, much more emphasis on providing in-service education is needed. |
Question b. I don't believe that we have enough instructional and support staff to meet the needs of our academic support students. |
4b and 5b: Some class sizes are too large. Specifically I am thinking of math classes. We give lip service to an increased emphasis on math this year, but then put thirty students into each section of Concepts of Algebra -- a course intended to help struggling math students. In order to improve our state test scores, we need to be able to offer more individual attention to those students; and putting thirty students in a class is not going to accomplish that goal. |
Policies are written and in place. The majority of support staff are excellent. |
Jobs are understood and expectations are met. |
Job descriptions and duties are listed in the teacher's handbook. |
Much of our curriculum coordination has been done on the part of our building administrators who have tremendous vision and skill. These two men have so much to do… the curriculum director has minimal input or interaction with the staff. |
organizational structure allows for positive communication between levels; quality of the staff is excellent |
A wide variety of professional development possibilities are provided to staff members. |
There seems to be clear communication between staff and administration. |
They are diligent, dedicated and patient people. |
Rules and regulations regarding employees are clearly stated in writing. |
District leadership encourages professional development by the staff, and provides opportunities for input and ideas from staff. |
The district is very organized in the responsibilities designated to staff. |
n/a |
Professional development is lacking in the area of software usage. What little training is provided is poor. |
Our Superintendent, Dr. Johnson, is a nice person, but is not sufficiently interested in the details required for maintaining a positive environment in the classroom. For example, two technology staff members for a) every computer in four buildings, and b) the district network as a whole is simply not enough! Also, the contract for heating and cooling control in the High School is a joke - some rooms are stifling while others are freezing. |
large class sizes in subjects that are tested by the state |
Enriching staff development opportunities are sorely needed. |
none |
Some class sizes are excessive. Regular classes with large numbers of special education students should be assigned aides to help manage the class. |
there are not significant weaknesses in regards to these objectives |
Some staff members are compensated in addition to their regular salary for jobs they complete during school hours. |
Class size too large Need for more staff |
There are not enough technology support people. |
Classes are sometimes too large and there are not enough teachers for the student population. |
Very little TIME during in-service or Act 80 days is allocated for professional development that is urgent, such as technology training on new systems/programs unfamiliar to staff. Mini-courses are offered after school or during the summer, when many staff members have other commitments. |
The faculty are never asked to evaluate the effectiveness of the administration or execution of programs. 2. Faculty do not have much input on in-service programs. Not enough resources are given for in-service programs. 3. There is little or no attention given to the morale and workload of staff. |
STANDARD #4: Educational Programs
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
a lot of course offerings |
We seldom have opportunity to collaborate across levels. |
Communication regarding curriculum coordination between different levels within the district is minimal. i. Incoming students or those who haven’t experienced success in their courses seem often to be placed according to the dictates of the master schedule rather than according to their needs. We need better options for the placement of students who tend to be underachievers. |
Educational resources are often NOT up-to-date or sufficient, or maintained in top working order, due to lack of funding and budget constraints, particularly in the area of technology at the high school. Computer labs have insufficient #s of computers for most class sizes, and frequently some of these computers or printers necessary do not work properly. Repairs take a long time because of insufficient technology staff hired, and the district's refusal to add more tech staff. Some textbooks (one of mine included) are more than 10 yrs. old, in bad shape, with some incorrect and outdated information, but budgets for new materials are very limited and tight. |
7c: We need to teach students HOW to study, as well as expect them to study. 7g: See comments for 9g+h |
Teachers of Freshmen may need to incorporate more movement in their classrooms, to help students get used to the block, as opposed to the period schedule they have been used to in the Middle School. |
SU courses are excellent opportunity |
Highly Academic. |
Great teachers! Rigorous academic standards and a wonderful school atmosphere. |
A wide variety of high level courses for students to pursue their strengths/possible college majors. |
# of electives and opportunities |
There are a variety of subjects for students to explore. |
use of block scheduling; challenging course offerings; variety of course offerings supported by administration/school board; |
Students have a wide variety of non-required courses to choose from. |
Wide range of courses available |
We offer a wide variety of courses that may fit the needs and interests of almost all students. |
The students receive a well-rounded education. |
The most precise curriculum at the high school level is the Wahg department's Wahg I-III. All teachers use the same rubrics and student expectations are clearly specified. |
For a school of its size, SAHS offers an impressive array of course options. |
We give students an excellent overview in many different subject matters. Teachers are committed to excellence. |
The High School's educational programs are well designed and articulated, and offer challenges and opportunities for students' academic and personal growth. |
1. The faculty are highly educated and effective |
Each program is very good individually, and each program also works together well so that the students can see connections with their course content. |
a variety of courses are offered the transition from middle to high school seems apparent |
Still too many failures in individual courses. |
While articulation between the Middle School and High School curricula exists, the PA state standards do not appear to consider it as important. Standards require material to be covered in grades 9-12, regardless of what occurs in 6-8! |
Not enough low level courses with high expectations. |
transition from middle to high school is a large jump...not sure what is being done to prepare the students |
The number of mandatory subjects may or may not be a weakness. |
need to reduce class sizes to 25 students or less for all courses; |
Scheduling makes it difficult for students to take advantage of the wide variety of courses offered to them. |
Scheduling is often in the way of students taking advantage of the wide range of courses offered. |
Going from a middle school setting of 30 minute periods to a block schedule may be a difficult transition for some. |
The guidance department could do a better job in course placement and career planning. |
There is not much coordination between the levels in the language arts and social studies areas. Ninth-graders come into the high school with different levels of research skills due to the greater emphasis on research in certain teams over others. |
While we prepare our best students reasonably well, average and below-average students need to be encouraged to push for greater personal achievement. |
We could use more technology -- specifically a tv / vcr /dvd in each room. Also, I'm not sure that 9th graders adjust well to the high school.
They are required to show a lot more independence and personal accountability. That transition may need to be addressed. |
1. The schedule is not appropriate and does not allow students to take many electives. 2. The block in the schedule is too long to maintain attention span. 3. Faculty was never trained in block schedule planning 4. Not enough money is spent on resources and materials to effectively teach some classes. |
n/a |
course offerings for identified students, can be difficult to place a student due to support |
b. An 'information skills curriculum'? Students can get help in improving their research and literacy skills, but these aspects of our educational program often receive short shrift--due primarily to teachers feeling that they already have too many skills and concepts to teach effectively. |
Current course selection process for high school students has too many 'loopholes' that allow them to effectively avoid taking the more challenging courses that would stretch them to reach their full potential. Many (who are capable of more) select the 'easy' courses to fulfill their graduation requirements for Math and English, allowing them to graduate without ever having had a formal Literature course or an upper-level Math course. I believe this needs to change. |
STANDARD #5: Learning Media Services and Technology
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
The mobile lab is a cumbersome solution, which means that teachers tend not to plan as much use of technology as they would with more easily accessed tools. |
Feel we have achieved greater technological adequacy over the last few years. |
Trying to improve technology more each year...growing with the times. |
some training is good |
Equipment is replaced or upgraded. |
continued investment in instructional technology and supporting software |
There is a wide variety of technology available to teachers for their use. |
The librarian is constantly asking for our input about materials and programs. She makes us feel as if we have a say about what goes into our Media Center program. |
There is a decent collection of technology in the building. |
We have a friendly informed staff that is current with new databases, print materials and other technologies. |
The school has invested in two mobile computer labs, which are a great asset to instruction. |
Our students are very technologically aware and savvy. |
Long-range planning is in place for providing equipment and curriculum in the area of information technology. |
Faculty and staff are willing to learn and media staff members are effective. |
a variety of services are offered |
There are not enough people employed in the tech field. The tech services employees are overworked and understaffed. There also are not enough funds spent in purchasing new technology. |
We need to advance further in this area. This is our student's future and I feel it needs to be incorporated more fully into each subject. |
not enough staff to deal effectively with technological difficulties frequent computer program glitches/ errors/ and frequent periods with system not working properly |
Some buildings appear to be more technologically prepared than our building. |
The mobile lab is a cumbersome solution, which means that teachers tend not to plan as much use of technology as they would with more easily accessed tools. Students arrive at the high school without adequate keyboarding skills. |
after some training, equipment isn't available or functioning...can't count on it |
The need for a technology assistant in each building. |
It's difficult to learn and implement new technology without release time to work on it. Technology needs to be consistently maintained. |
need for computer literacy course as a graduation requirement |
Not all areas of the school can make the most of technology due to lack of Internet capabilities or outdated computers. |
more money for books and technology! |
More investment in technology, unfortunately, is always needed. |
Media Services must not rely solely on technological resources for students. Print resources must be promoted. |
We seem to experience uneven performance from our internet server. |
We need more computers, projectors, smart boards, televisions, DVD players and VCR's. Also, having a computer hooked up to a viewing device in every room would be enormously helpful. |
Allocation of funds does NOT keep pace with what is needed for effective implementation, neither for the quantity of computers/equipment required, nor especially with the need to hire additional Tech. staff to effectively maintain existing systems and equipment, and also to provide staff with the necessary training. |
Not enough money to buy new software or set up proper computer labs for all programs. Little or no in-service programs on latest technology. |
All teachers should have access to more technology in their classroom. |
additional orientations on how to access materials |
STANDARD #6: Student Services
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
Follow-up studies for graduates and other former students are not carried out. If they are, the resultant data are not shared with staff to help in determining the effectiveness of school programs. |
I feel we need to do a better job of helping students determine potential career options prior to college. Helping them to narrow their focus. |
9g and 9h: Without being critical of the guidance counselors themselves (who may not always have a say in what their duties are), our guidance department has become sidetracked by too many other responsibilities that they have almost abandoned the original purpose of high school guidance programs: career guidance. The guidance department needs to focus more on helping students plan for their careers. This includes two key areas: 1) Helping students thoughtfully choose high school courses which will prepare them for career fields in which they are interested. 2) Helping students decide what type -- if any -- of post-high-school education they will pursue, and helping them in admissions and financial aid application processes. |
I've never seen any data on former students. |
Do we do research on our graduates? Could we see that if we do? |
If follow up studies are being done, results are not being shared with staff. |
I'm not really sure of 'e'. |
e. We don't seem to have this information in any form other than the random relation of anecdotes. |
Follow-up studies of graduates are carried out; these have never been shared with staff to my knowledge, and I don't know where one would find them. |
Health staff can no longer inform faculty members of serious health or physical needs of our students because of current confidentiality rules; this is difficult for faculty who have these students in class. |
Medical records are confidential there we are not informed |
I think HIPPA may have killed some of our paths for communication regarding health concerns for specific students. We used to get lists of students with serious issues; now we have no idea. |
When CPR training is offered, it is done at the same time as something else or, on exchange days when much of the staff is off. The health staff does not inform the faculty about serious health or physical needs that may exist in the student body. |
Handicap accessibility is limited. |
There are many 'junk food' options available through food services. |
The nutritional value of the cafeteria food is suspect, in my opinion. |
Provided through the health classes in the school. An effort to provide nutritional information is beginning to be seen in the food service area---the menu. |
we have the snack shack |
Really need to look into making more healthy options (example: pizza and parsley potatoes? carbs + carbs?) |
I have no way of knowing this. |
Too much 'junk food' is offered to the students. Is good nutrition or good profit the real goal. |
t. We seem to be relying on income from less than healthy food choices to keep our food service solvent. The presence of the Snack Shack is somewhat contradictory to the district's stated wellness policy regarding food in the classroom. |
Nutrition info is provided in all health classes, but is seriously undermined by the fact that all high school students are offered the opportunity to purchase non-nutritional junk food (chips, donuts, cookies, soda, etc.), both in the cafeteria and from drink machines throughout the building. Without this tempting option, many more students would probably learn to buy and eat healthier foods at school. |
The high school cafeteria is too small for the amount of students enrolled. |
Junk food being sold during lunch is out of hand. Limit the kinds of food being sold. |
New learning support teacher is great Students are being held accountable |
We need a larger support staff to meet these needs. |
as far as I know |
I'm not sure of 'x'. |
I don't know anything about what prospective enrollees are or are not told. |
Students new to the building receive very little introduction to the academic expectations. |
I am unsure about the policies concerning admissions into our school. |
x. can't answer this - I don't know what parents and students enrolling in S.A.S.D. are told or what materials they are given |
Student Services are provided for those needing it. |
Dedicated and capable counselors. Effective transportation services. Excellent school nurses. |
Students are given many opportunities to explore their future, through college visitations and class meeting with their counselors. |
Opportunities are available |
Many varied areas support the student needs. |
well-defined procedure for enrollment |
There is a broad range of courses and programs for all students. |
We do a good job assessing students' abilities and appropriate placement. |
Most staff are highly caring individuals who do their best to help individual students. |
Guidance personnel attempt to make new students feel welcome and introduce them to some staff members; also attempt to schedule their classes based on what they had taken at their previous schools. |
|
I would like to see more teachers involved in the referral process, so that more students are identified that need help in particular areas. Too many teachers try to 'handle' problem behaviors that may signal a student's need for further help. |
Nutritional value of cafeteria offerings is dubious at best. |
Students need to know their counselor on a one-to-one basis, as they prepare for their future. |
if health is preached, health should be practiced (food-wise) |
unknown |
there are no significant weaknesses in the area or student services |
In some cases students are not placed in classes that they are best suited for in the high school. |
We don't seem to care much about the lower-achieving students. |
Course placement is often less than optimal for incoming students, especially for students with academic or language deficiencies. |
Communicating with, scheduling classes for, and providing sufficient individual language instruction for new ESL students is an ongoing problem. No one among the high school guidance personnel speaks a language other than English, and the district's current ESL staff remains insufficient (due to lack of funding) to effectively meet the special needs of these high school students. Also, additional training should be provided for the regular faculty regarding the difficulties these students experience, and what expectations for them from the classroom teacher are realistic. |

STANDARD #7: Student Life and Student Activities
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
the football gets way too much of the money for facilities. |
We have a tremendous grouping of choices for extracurricular activities. |
We have an EXCELLENT school atmosphere and wonderful co-curricular activities. |
Wide variety of clubs/organizations. |
Excellent opportunities |
The variety of extracurricular activities that are available to the students. |
significant opportunities exist for participation in student life/activities |
We have a great number of activities available to students and our students do take advantage of these. |
Student Council has a strong record of providing activities to promote school spirit and school citizenship. |
Many opportunities for students to explore their interests are provided. |
At the high school level, we offer a large variety of activities and organizations for students to participate in, so any student who wishes to be involved should be able to find something to suit his or her interests. |
Too many activities are on the same Thursday. A calendar enabling group leaders to stagger meeting times would enable more students to be involved in multiple groups. |
I'd like to kill the junk food and soda machines that fund some athletic programs. |
Not all students participate....seems like the same kids to EVERYTHING! |
mixed messages in terms of establishing a stellar playing field that only benefits certain teams |
unknown |
there are no significant weaknesses for this standard |
More money is needed for small programs - lots of money goes into sports programs - what about the needs of our music programs, our business leadership programs, our forensics program, our publication program, etc. through the students activities fund |
Sometimes students are not supervised well on outside activities related to the school. |
Activity funding, compensation of faculty leaders for activities, and student release from school time for such activities heavily favor athletic activities over all others. I would like to see more balance for academic and cultural activities, since these are equally valuable for student growth as lifelong learners, and many of our students are not interested in (or incapable of)participating in sports. |
Little or no funds are provided for activities. The funds are mostly raised by students. |
STANDARD #8: Facilities
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
The facility is in need of repair to maintain a safe environment. |
The heat in the building is a distraction to students and a barrier to student learning and concentration. |
The ventilation system rarely works in areas without air conditioning. |
Comment on 16a reflects the poor HVAC system which directly affects students' ability to concentrate and learn. |
The HS building was renovated in 1984 and is due for a revisit. The areas of security, HVAC, Storage are issues that need addressing. |
Climate/temperature/ventilation control is a serious problem. Classrooms are not cleaned regularly. Elevator access from the second floor is restricted. |
Bathrooms need work; Class size is often too large; Many travelling teachers without classrooms. |
b: Extremely poor air quality with no ventilation and high CO2 levels |
a. The current condition of our heating/cooling/air circulation capacity is pretty dismal and may, in fact, by a health risk to some staff and students. |
The high school building and equipment (heating/cooling system in particular) are not sufficiently maintained/upgraded to provide good health or a conducive learning environment for students. |
The building is in dire need of improvements...even a paint job would be moral boosting. Rooms could be cooler during hot weather so when the athletes are finished for the day, they can go to their million dollar facilities fresh and able to succeed there too, not wiped out from sweating in school all day. |
Clean building with messes cleaned up quickly. |
The school campus is a pleasure to visit with facilities being used by both school and community groups. We have wonderful athletic fields and facilities!!! |
Custodial staff (Mr. James Kaufman) does an excellent job. |
Leveled buildings provide good transition throughout the school years. |
safety drills are practiced |
The campus itself. |
school district makes every attempt to provide a safe/healthy physical environment |
We have a number of different areas to accommodate everything from gym to chorus. |
Our large campus provides room for growth, and our maintenance staff at the high school works hard to keep the building clean and functional, within the limitations of the building's age and an ineffective heating/cooling system that is incapable of maintaining large parts of the building at proper temperatures or with sufficient air flow. |
Great new football stadium and new work on the soccer field. |
n/a |
The school ventilation system is not adequate, nor is the air conditioning system. They are in need of repair. |
The extreme heat at times, often up to 85 degrees. Even the extreme heat in November has been a distraction and distress to students. |
HVAC |
1/HVAC is in need of renovation in the building. Improvement to the system is needed due to the change of usage of classrooms. Computer labs need air conditioning climate control due to the increase heat generated by the tech equipment. 2/Storage for equipment gear tools is needed and need to be secure. 3/Building security entry doors need to be replaced with magnetic secure doors. 4/A central secure entry point is needed for the building. 5/ Additional video monitors is needed for security of the total building. |
Heating/cooling system ineffective in many areas of the High School. Science facilities insufficient for curricular goals. |
Class sizes are too large to be effective within the classroom. |
large class size inadequate ventilation and air conditioning |
Climate/temperature/ventilation control is a serious problem. Classrooms are not cleaned regularly. Elevator access from the second floor is restricted. |
room climates...temperature control certain lab facilities |
Poor climate control in some rooms. |
Heating, ventilation and cooling systems are woefully inadequate and inconsistent from one part of the building to another. Many floors and walls are in need of repair. |
high school building needs significant upgrades in regards to heating/cooling system; carpeting replacement, general repairs, painting, etc. |
The heating and cooling of the school is horrible and is detrimental to the learning process during hot months and during the first cold months of winter. |
Our computer equipment and supply needs to be boosted - our building needs its own tech support person Class size is out of control for some courses. More staff is needed to meet the students' needs. |
classes can be too large. |
Lack of effective air conditioning where it theoretically exists. Lack of AC throughout the building. Uneven heating throughout. |
The HVAC situation in the high school is more than terrible. Rooms (especially those with no windows) are uncomfortably hot, even in cool weather. Students quickly become uncomfortable and lethargic in the heat. Keeping their attention becomes a struggle when all they can think about is trying to keep cool or how much longer they have to stay in the hot room. Teachers are forced to leave doors open to the noise and distractions of the hallway and run loud fans to help the situation, or to close their doors further containing the heat. It hurts instruction, and it hurts classroom morale. Students and faculty are frustrated because this issue has been a problem for a long time, but it seems to be getting worse instead of better. It creates a very 'cranky' atmosphere. |
Funds need to be allocated to fix some serious problems at the high school, such as numerous leaks in the roof, outside doors that are not secure and can be kicked open by students, and a heating/ventilation system that has constant problems and has never worked properly. Neither students nor staff should have to endure as much as a 20 degree (or more) temperature difference when traveling to different parts of the building for classes and duties, or be stuck in classrooms with insufficient air flow. It is not healthy for anyone, and does not further the achievement of desired learning outcomes or positive morale among students and faculty. Many students and parents have expressed to me that these needs, which affect ALL students and staff at the high school and directly impact the delivery of our academic program, should have been addressed BEFORE spending millions of dollars to upgrade the sports facilities, and I concur. |
Having extremes in temperature in the classroom during warm spells makes it difficult to work and learn. Having the ability to regulate room temperature even in the winter would be a great improvement. It's hot indoors when it's hot outside and it's hot indoors when it's cold outside. There's nothing to do but suffer through it. |
The high school building is too old to provide a quality facility for education. Walls and ceilings are crumbling. The heating and cooling system does not function properly. There are constant sewer gases present in the hallways and faculty room. The auditorium is too small to fit the student body or any significantly sized stage production. |
n/a |
Some areas have inadequate ventilation, and leaks promote growth of mold and mildew. I have no idea if the building is inspected for health standards. |
Routine cleaning is not adequate. Ventilation/heating systems are not cleaned adequately. |
STANDARD #9: Health and Safety
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
Unsure of what government regulations are required. Backpacks inhibit quick exits out of rooms. Ventilation ducts inspections for mold? |
d. Medical exams for incoming students??? h. If we do have 'regular health inspections,' I'm not sure that they would always find us up to the mark. |
g. Outside doors are not secure and very easy to break into; dead-bolt locks should be installed to protect the valuable equipment and records in the high school building. |
Well prepared for drills. |
good drills |
We have practice drills. |
district makes every attempt to maintain a healthy and safe environment |
Generally the facilities are fine. |
Administrators follow the letter of the law in maintaining the safety of our students. |
Safety drills are conducted with students and staff for procedures for fire, tornados, and emergency lockdown. All high school staff and students are issued photo ID cards yearly, and visitors are asked to go to the Main Office to sign in and pick up a visitor's pass. |
Emergency plans are written. Practice drills take place. Clear and written code of conduct is in place. |
n/a |
staff is well prepared and provided several opportunities for students and staff |
Air quality/exchange when the ventilation system is not working is a concern for both students and staff. |
n/a |
sometimes labs are too crowded (safety??) |
We should have more drills. |
Fire drill safety procedures for handicapped students |
heating/cooling system; additional renovations needed to provide a higher level of security |
There are times the climate controls in the high school are a problem. |
Health care away from school, say at an away sporting event, is inadequate for students. |
AIR QUALITY CONTROL |
The air is questionable. The building seems dangerous with ceilings and walls crumbling. The large groups of students in band and chorus don't have a secure place in the case of an armed criminal and can not exit the building fast enough through just one exit door. |
STANDARD #10: Finances
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
I know very little about school finances.
|
Don't know for sure about 'h'. |
Budgeting at all levels. |
stakeholders provide adequate funding of school district educational programs |
Costs are general kept prudent. |
The district does submit to regular audits, and the Business Manager appears to be capable and knowledgeable. |
At the high school, no one - students or faculty/staff - is required to visibly display or wear their photo ID cards. We're told to 'be vigilant for people who don't belong in the building', but that is nearly impossible without wearing visible ID badges that would make such intruders easy to spot. Today's reality of violence probably indicates that it's time to require wearing photo ID badges daily. (Some neighboring districts already do this successfully.) There is also a problem during the day with outside doors often being propped (and left) open. This should not be happening since it makes it far too easy for any crazy person with a gun to enter the school easily. |
Low numbers for availability of financial resources for the educational program, 'prudent control' of allocation of these resources, and input from stakeholders about financial decisions reflect the dissatisfaction with the ineffectiveness (or sidestepping) of this process in the board's decision to spend unnecessary millions of dollars to improve athletic facilities that would have been more appropriately spent FIRST for textbooks, additional technology items and staff, needed building repairs, and additional faculty to reduce class sizes. |
All financial areas are controlled and properly accounted. |
n/a |
Having to make cuts from budget requests. |
there are no significant weaknesses in the area of finance |
We spend money on athletics, it seems, over everything else. |
See comments 2 boxes above. |
The budget is kept at the same level while cost of supplies goes up and the student enrollment goes up. Needed books are put on hold and/or not ordered. |
There is never enough money. The budget is always being cut. Programs have been cut. Faculty does not have enough input on prioritizing budget items.
|
STANDARD #11: Assessment of Student Learning
Comments: Strengths and Weaknesses
Students are often not correctly placed in the courses that they should be in. |
Motivated students do well. |
trying to find reliable and valid assessments (TeraNova, etc) |
Assessments are a regular part of the instruction and evaluation of the students. |
student assessment is directly linked to academic standards and local, state, and federal assessments |
Teachers practice multiple assessment practices to address different learning styles. |
The school continues to update its attempts to track student learning. |
Students are assessed regularly, using a variety of classroom as well as standardized testing measures/instruments. |
All teachers assess their students according to the work that they have completed, and to the ability that the student posesses. |
Not all students are held to high expectations. |
none--it has improved with technology |
there are no significant weaknesses in the area of assessment and student learning |
n/a |
PSSA testing requirements are a 'one-size-fits-all' approach that do not effectively show all areas of a student's academic and personal growth. |
Grade point averages are skewed for year-long courses at the high school depending on whether or not the student is taking the course all year long every other day, or every day for one semester. |
Not sure the public is incredibly aware of our plans. |
d. We chose to renovate the football stadium before renovating the high school. |
Through monthly curriculum meetings the faculty learns about changes and planning needs. |
school board is committed to long range planning |
Planning is evident at all times, not just before major deadlines. |
Long-range and improvements planning is constant and ongoing at all levels of instruction in the district. |
All teachers plan elaborate lessons that enable students to become involved in their classes to the fullest extent. |
unknown |
there are no significant weaknesses in the area of long range planning |
Parent input is minimal. |
This type of planning by faculty takes additional time beyond the daily planning for learning activities and assessments. Time to complete the 'big planning' is rarely provided to faculty/staff in sufficient amounts to get the necessary planning and paperwork done, which can undermine morale as well as commitment to the task. |
Comments from Parent Survey, Winter, 200
STANDARD #1 - Philosophy/Mission/Beliefs/Objectives
The philosophy and objective of this survey is to obtain opinions from parents about the school and its mission. I think that it is a good
thing, however, not everyone has had an opportunity for higher education that takes this survey and it can be difficult for them to
understand. Please keep this in mind! Simplify!
Where is the mission and policy widely publicized?
The strategic plan was written and shelved wasting time, effort and goodwill. Athletic spending trumped technology and academic program development.
lack luster expectations of students academically too much emphasis on sports and music
STANDARD #2- Governance and Leadership
1. I believe it would be helpful to invite parents to a school meeting/function/gathering or town hall to answer questions be presented with information regarding school philosophy and new direction and vision of leadership.
2. I think it is great that I see the superintendent at so many activities. Very involved in day-to-day activities of the students.
3. MS administration actively involved in the school. HS admin is detached and aloof, appears more concerned with teachers.
4. The communication from the school is rare and often has no bearing on academics or governance. No newsletter since May 2006. The newsletter focuses on teachers more than kids. The administration 'WINGS IT" much too often. The rule for one kid is not the rule for all students. Favoritism is blatantly shown towards, teachers, their children, and affluent people's kids.
5. Administration is frequently deceptive and arrogant when dealing with parents and the community. Teachers and what they want, rather than students and what they need, are the focus. Irregular communication that is often reactive rather than proactive.
6. Poor communication. District serves teachers, not students. Minimal accountability of admin and staff. This is demoralizing to good staff and students.
7. Consequences for actions are not always fairly handed out. Sometimes it depends more on who you are, what you are involved in within the school system, and who your parents are.
8. There is very little communication from administration regarding special needs classes. When I get a newsletter from the high school none of it applies to my child. There are never any articles about the special needs class. How about informing the school about SEALS den for instance?
STANDARD #3- Organizational Design and Staf
1. Class sizes too large, especially at elementary levels; inability to offer more advanced programs (e.g., AP Physics; orchestra; jazz band) because of lack of faculty
2. There are some teachers that need to change with the times and be willing to be taught by other peers. The concept of Team work is not always evident as well,
3. Mr. Edwards and Mr. Heiser go above and beyond the goals of higher education and more teachers like this are needed! They push their students to achieve the higher standards and this is greatly appreciated.
4. As a working parent, I hope the teachers are well qualified to fill the positions they have. I hope they know what they are doing.
5. felt much of 7th grade material was not age appropriate- it was too advanced.
6. #9 not all-but they seem to hang-on. Tenure?
7. #10- most teachers, there are a few who don't do more than necessary.
8. I was surprised at the poor quality of much of the program. People in the community assume and assert there is a quality there that is often lacking. It is unfortunate that the poor educators are allowed to overshadow the excellent teachers.
9. Poor teachers are protected and students are forced into their classes. Teachers' lack of compliance with programs, processes and standards is tolerated. Good and excellent teachers are not allowed the opportunity to lead their departments. They are marginalized by administration. Instructional mediocrity is the watchword.
10. Auditorium too small, band and chorus rooms inadequate for the number of participants. Weight room is ok if you are a member of the football team however other sports have very limited use.
11. Several unqualified teachers are being retained and sheltered by their colleagues to the detriment of the students. Ineffective and hostile teachers should be terminated.
12. For the first couple that I answered disagree to is because I am totally against teachers putting things on the chalkboard and not explaining a thing to the kids. They are expected to copy the information off the board and understand it without any kind of comment from the teacher.
13. There should be some way for parents to evaluate a teacher that isn't teaching effectively, or a teacher that is teaching above the standard.
STANDARD #4 - Educational Programs
1. I cannot understand the concept of night school! No grades- only 1/2 the required curriculum and only 3/4 of the required time. Day school is from 8-3, Night school-3:30-8:30? Sometimes night school ends early-7:30? Explain this concept of Higher Education? My friend’s son attends night school and receives the same credits as my son!! They are both in the 9th grade. This is not a punishment- This is a reward for unexcused behavior in school!!
2. There's not always enough resource time, especially for those who don't have computers. Especially if taking a lot of classes.
3. Physics in 7th grade was too advanced. Science Program is turning a normally positive student off.
4. The music program needs to be honored more than they are. The people and teachers get treated like crap. They need better acknowledgement.
5. Curriculum is out of touch with 21st century realities. Seems more focused on life as it was in the 1960s. Kudos to high school English dept. The writing PSSA score is outstanding. It reflects their success and dedication.
6. There is an inadequate utilization of local resources to enrich, enhance and advance the curriculum.
7. Some classes don't have enough books for the students, some classes are overcrowded, some class rooms are too small.
8. Mathematics program is tilted heavily to high achieving students at the expense of the struggling and average kids.
9. There are teachers who expect every child to be on an AP level and will not take the time to help the slower child
10. Too much focus on protecting past practice rather than proactive efforts towards current and relevant curriculum. Program is what teachers want to teach with little regard for PA academic standards or student needs/interests.
11. Intermediate level curriculum does not appropriately address the Pennsylvania State Standards and needs to be accurately aligned |
STANDARD #5- Learning Media Services and Technology
1. |
Research & writing skills are not uniformly encouraged / developed; few computer programming offerings (and those are at very basic level); it's certainly possible to graduate with minimal computer skills |
2. |
Compared to other districts locally - yes, I would agree that we are comparable or above technology. These district's appear to have more man power/tech support then Selinsgrove as well. Therefore, if the district were to increase in the tech arena then the district would also need to provide additional supports, which the board has found not relevant to date. |
3. |
Again, for those without home computers, not enough time to know if adequate or not. |
4. |
I don't know how student without internet at home can perform adequately. |
5. |
The computers are there but they are being used minimally in courses. I was shocked there are no required computer classes since it is a primary communication tool. Many teachers seem technologically ignorant or incompetent. |
6. |
There is adequate technology but it is underutilized at best. The faculty is not providing a 21st century education. The High School's web site is amateurish and provides inadequate information for 2006. Only a couple classes provide materials online. They all should. |
7. |
Teachers balk at effectively using the available technology to hide their own mediocrity and inadequacy. Knee jerk rejection to using digital media as an alternative to print resources. Many teachers refuse to cooperate with the use of technology even for communication with parents. |
|
STA NDARD #8 - Student Services
1. |
High school guidance office understaffed for college preparatory work; not able to provide students with full range of services offered at other schools (one-on-one counseling for college admissions, college selection assistance, etc.) |
2. |
Junk Food choices as supplement or alternative to main meal and inappropriate for school. |
3. |
I would like to see the cafeteria/food services provide more nutritional choices for the kids. Try to eliminate friend, greasy, fatty foods and sodas from the diet. |
4. |
Food/Nutritional Education lacking. Eating disorders are common particularly with females. Poor veggie salads offered. |
5. |
career awareness is on a very limited basis. The students are not exposed to a lot of the careers that are available and that are in demand now or will be in the near future. |
6. |
Unprofessional behavior of come guidance department members is a significant issue of concern. They are too vested in internal politics rather than students' needs. |
7. |
i feel the school does not give the students enough information or help in choosing a course of action when they are entering college. They are helpful in college choices but i feel that more can be done in presenting options in what field they would be best suited for as a major in college i also had an incident with my daughter concerning her health and a health concern that the school had. she was called to the nurse for this concern but i was never contacted about it. i was already taking charge of the problem at home and by the schools action put my child’s progress back. in the future, i think that parents should be told of all major concern of their children. |
8. |
The guidance department is much more adversarial to the students than one would expect. It serves the system and the teachers not the kids. The blatant politics in that department (turning kids from vo-tech, withholding info on local college programs, jerking kids around regarding course registration) is unprofessional. |
9. |
Per #22- I think the mentors and counselors case loads are too large to do an adequate job. |
10. |
Too many carbs served in cafeteria. Heavy bias against Vo-Tech program in guidance program. Guidance focuses on preserving teacher's pet programs rather than referring the students to better opportunities for them. |
|
STANDARD #7 Student Life and Student Activities
1. |
The school needs to monitor and disband "smokers Corner". Destruction of private property, drug use, and under-age smoking before and after school is unexceptable, unexcusable and tacky! |
2. |
Again I hope supervising staff would be qualified and providing appropriate supervision. |
3. |
#30- again most teachers but not all |
4. |
The cheerleading coach for football was obviously unqualified as I saw the girls performing stretching routines that were actually dangerous to their muscles and the coach stood by and watched. |
5. |
Poor quality leadership in several programs in athletics and arts. Clearly more vested in feathering their nests than working with students. |
6. |
The activities program does NOT foster a positive school social environment. Quite the opposite is true. In many cases it provides the structure to perpetuate the exclusivity and elitism that permeates the building. The programs are used by students and faculty to reward and punish people that feel do not belong or are not "their kind". Several adults who lead these groups are the worst offenders. They model the social cruelty that goes on. They mock fellow teachers, administrators, and parents to the kids. |
7. |
Some individuals coaching are mean spirited and use obscenities with kids. They are excessively negative and do this in front of student's peers. |
|
STANDARD #8 - Facilities
1. |
Class sizes too large; inadequate facilities at high school for music / arts |
2. |
Auditorium has not been conducive to high school education for many years. The heating/cooling system is not consistent and balanced as well. |
3. |
The grounds, floors, desks, facilities are FILTHY. |
4. |
All High School classrooms should have air conditioning. |
5. |
The High School Needs Air Conditioning! Fans and open windows are not acceptable on high heat index days! It's a health hazard and these students are not sent home. ie...Heat stroke and Dehydration. |
6. |
High School needs a larger auditorium. School System should have a swimming pool & program. #35 - depends on school. |
7. |
#38 No! and hallways are way too small. |
8. |
It's unfortunate that the auditorium is so small and performing groups have to compete for rehearsal time at the middle school. also it's a shame that the auditorium is not air conditioned for the comfort of the audience. The Fine Arts at the high school seem to have taken a back seat to sports. That is one area for which I feel less proud of our school. |
|
STANDARD #9- Health and Safety
1. |
Concern about access to building main office during school hours - safety concern. |
2. |
I have asked both Mrs. Krause and Dr. Johnson for the "code of student conduct" and was basically told it doesn't exist by Mrs. Krause. |
3. |
What is the emergency plan for the high school during heat waves? This needs to be implemented and parents need to be informed! |
4. |
There is inadequate security at the High School. Doors are left unlocked or blocked open. The faulty does not wear ID badges. How are new people or visitors to know who is who? |
|
STANDARD #10- Finances
1. |
Spending too much money on sports facilities and not enough Technology and improved the facilities (A/C System) |
2. |
Far too much money spent on SAHS Football program. Could be better used in the Academic Area. Teachers need to step up and pay for more of their own retirement and health care. I Do! (As do most other workers!) |
3. |
#43 FOOTBALL FIELD!! |
4. |
Very disappointed in how money was managed for a new football field, football should not be the main focus, there are other sports and activities. |
5. |
Too much money is spent on athletics at the expense of academics and other programs. |
6. |
Apparently not if the school doesn't have the funds to buy enough books for the courses they offer. |
7. |
Excessive spending in non-academics has hurt the academic program. See test scores |
|
STANDARD # 11- Assessment of Student Learning
1. |
Although there are progress reports, there is no communication to indicate why the student is not progressing, nor is there any indication that the faculty takes responsibility for the student's lack of progress. If there are tutors available, that has not been communicated to the parents as well. Parents are only notified if the faculty believes there are "behavior problems" but not if there are problems for the student to understand the material presented. |
2. |
When a child's grades drop for NO apparent reason or the child is struggling with a class the parent should be notified ASAP- Not when progress reports come out! That is setting the child up to fail! |
3. |
Lettergrade is awesome. |
4. |
I appreciate the new program, where we as parents can go onto a website to stay up to date with our children's grades and classes. |
5. |
Some teachers/coaches/advisors do an excellent job communicating with parents and keeping us informed. Others refuse to respond or reply to questions or answer in a rude or arrogant way. |
6. |
Too many Teachers blame parents and kids rather than looking at what they can change in their own efforts to improve student scores/ progress The few rubrics I've seen are no more than scoring sheets. They do not tell the students how to succeed or exactly what is being measured. I believe the new online grade program will greatly improve communication of expectations and progress. It is one ray of hope in a dismal picture. |
7. |
Teachers tend to blame kids for their lack of success. English department has done a good job of helping most kids succeed. |
8. |
Too many teachers use the excuse that it is the child’s fault all the time, when in turn the teacher doesn't take the time |
9. |
When students did poorly on their PSSA tests the teachers and administrators blamed the students. However, if the students are never taught the information being tested, how fair is it to blame them????? Accountability by the administrators, teachers and students needs to be taken. Therefore, the district needs to take a strong look at where the curriculum is lacking and the students, as well as the parents, need to take the tests and education in general seriously. |
|
STANDARD #12- Planning
NO COMMENTS
INPUT ON SURVEY
If it did not, what aspects were omitted? Please add any other comments that you feel may be helpful contributions to the school as it seeks to identify its strengths and the areas in which it needs to improve. COMMENTS |
|
1. |
All students who need support should be provided the extra support, even if it is for a short time period or a specific subject. It appears that only the gifted and the challenged are offered the supports. The middle is lost. There also needs to be some way to address middle school students in a more positive manner than to consider them "squirrely" or behavior problems. Our elementary school, intermediate school and high school teach responsibility and accountability. Our middle school students are taught that they are bad and have to be treated like prisoners each day. When I was in school the seventh and eighth grades were in the high school. Not that I want to return to those days, but there was a period each day for interaction with sports, clubs, etc. Middle school aged students need to learn socialization skills as much or more than any other age group. They also have a need to belong, so why not give them positive groups with whom to associate while promoting their interests? |
2. |
music, arts, course selection block scheduling is a MAJOR problem - makes it extremely difficult for students to take diverse courses (e.g., art/music, foreign language, AP courses - almost an impossible combination here), multiple AP courses, multiple foreign languages. It puts college prep students at a serious disadvantage compared to their peers at other schools, and it reduces their exposure to areas where they have varied interests & talents |
3. |
This space is not large enough for my comments. |
4. |
Cleanliness of school promotes pride and morale of all involved. There is NO excuse that a progressive school such as ours should be DIRTY. |
5. |
The District has spent millions of tax payer money building new school and improving fields. When are they going to upgrade the high school? Air conditioning, New desk, bigger auditorium?? Bring this building up to acceptable standards!! |
6. |
The IEP program is wonderful, My son can't say enough about Mr. "D" |
7. |
I strongly believe that every physically able student should be required to pass a very basic swim test in the order to graduate. What a great service SASD would provide these kids. I mean, come on, 3/4 of the globe is covered by the wet stuff! Students should be tested as early as possible and as young as possible. |
8. |
While most of the space needs seem adequate, the rooms for the performing arts are undersized and the auditorium is far too small for a school of this size. The district relies on the middle school auditorium for all performances and it gets booked quickly. |
9. |
You must update the curriculum for the 21st century. Facilitate kids achieving their goals rather than forcing them into courses to preserve school's antiquated programs. |
10. |
There needs to be faculty accountability. The program must focus on serving students not perpetuating its own processes. Withholding teacher assignments to prevent people from transferring out before the class starts is inappropriate. It is unconscionable that you punish kids with F's for moving out of poor performing teacher's classrooms. Beyond that, the F policy makes students very hesitant to try challenges because of the F for transferring out if they are overwhelmed. |
|
Comments from Student Survey, Winter/Spring, 2007
Standard #1—Philosophy, Mission, Beliefs, Objectives |
I don't see anything that truly represents the mission of our school in terms that a student would be able to understand. Yes, there are those of us who can understand "big words", but seriously, don't expect all of our students to pick up on what the handbook says. Especially since that’s the only place I've ever seen the mission statement (in the handbook) |
I disagree because the school gives off the point that they want us to learn but some classes we have to take don't apply to the real world. |
I understand that it is very important to faculty members that we obey the classroom rules |
They tell us what they expect from us at the beginning of every year. |
yeah! |
this school is very organized and fair |
They state what we're supposed to do before every school year. |
i forget what it means |
My school is great and all, but they are a little naive when it comes to goals. |
DUH! this is a test |
Standard #2—Governance and Leadership |
There are certain students who get away with a lot of things while others get nailed just because they have a history of discipline problems which is inappropriate. Students don't deserve to have less faith put in them just because they've made mistakes before. |
I've seen people get in trouble for things and then watch others not get in trouble for the same exact reason, just because they are football players, or they are friends with the teacher and I'm sorry, but that should not be allowed |
I feel certain areas of the school are given a greater emphasis, such as athletics, while other areas, such as the musical arts, are thriving but are facing many unfair obstacles from the administration. |
Yeah maybe if we had air conditioning, and some heating, Maybe could learn better. And be more focused on our work. Football field ring a bell with all the money wasted? |
i believe that the principals have their favorites!!!! |
i think the administration deals differently with different people in the school. people who are more popular in the school are treated differently. |
i have a real big problem with math i wish there was some help with people who have math problems. |
The administration I think is not fair with all of their decisions. I think our administrators are VERY favorative with the students. Some teachers I think demonstrate good leadership but some don't. I think some teachers try to create a good learning environment for students but others don't care |
For #2, they aren’t fair because every kid learns different. Taking stupid PSSA tests and the 4-sight tests aren’t good for every kid. It is a waste of time that we could be doing something else. But no, they force us to take them so the school can get money. |
when the administration is dealing with situations with the kids in the school i honestly don't think they know what they’re doing! and when it comes to dealing with their parents, all they do is kiss their butts so there's no conflict! |
Everyone tries very hard so students can get the best learning possible |
You almost always see one or both of the principles walking around the school, and being involved with the students throughout the day. |
We have an excellent administration here at our district. |
they’re nice. |
it’s easy to learn something new in each class once you get farther into the course |
They do an ok job dealing with out of school incidents but do provide effective leadership |
Good Job! |
hello |
they are strict about fighting |
If by leadership, you mean dictatorship, then yes, the administration does provide effective leadership. |
|
Standard #3-- Organizational Design and Staff |
1. |
if a teacher says that they hate their job and don't like teaching then they should not be teaching here. |
2. |
There are a few teachers that I can think of off of the top of my head who I feel are not adequate to be teaching at this point. Honestly, I'm aware of Act 48 and they are the ones who need to take advantage of it to improve their teaching skills. |
3. |
I think that we have a highly qualified staff of teachers at Selinsgrove, but I think there were also a few glitches in hiring here and there. For instance, I have two classes with the same teacher and in both of them we basically just sit around. |
4. |
i do not know on number 7 because i think they should have more than one teacher in the classroom because there are too many students for just one teacher to handle on his or her own |
5. |
One teacher told me I am an 'implant' and don't belong in this country, because I am Puerto Rican. |
6. |
smaller class sizes would be welcomed |
7. |
Obviously teachers have to be qualified to teach in a school so they should know how to things they teach. Who cares if there is an adequate number of teachers and staff members that doesn't bother students. |
8. |
I think when it comes to my teachers creating a positive environment in their classrooms, they do a very good job at it. |
9. |
some teachers seem to make more mistakes then the students and don’t really teach, they only talk about the homework and give tests without ever really teaching the subject |
10. |
My one class does not listen that good and the teacher lets kids get away with things they shouldn’t do and he yells a lot. Some kids carry knifes around. They also chew in this particular class. |
11. |
Most teachers explain things very well and others not so well. |
12. |
Sometimes I feel that the teachers don't always convey the information in an understandable way. |
13. |
We have an excellent teaching staff at our school. |
14. |
my name is happy |
15. |
some are bad some are good. |
16. |
this school has very nice teachers that are good at helping you with your problems |
17. |
I had a science teacher yesterday tell me she didn't know what a blue moon was. Other than that all my teachers are qualified. |
18. |
Certain teachers are amazing at their job and have a passion for teaching. Others in my opinion should be more helpful to students and explain things more. Some people just are not meant to be teachers. |
19. |
most of the teachers are nice |
20. |
While I must agree that most of my teachers are overly qualified, some, on the other hand, are NOT EVEN CLOSE. Namely ______________. |
21. |
In exploration in technology, it is hard for one teacher to be able to help all the students so it is hard to get work done |
22. |
exploration in technology needs another teacher to help the students with all of the problems the bad computers give and for the questions the class has ex in tech class has to be done in a certain amount in of time and it can take up to 30 to 40 minutes to get a question answered this sets anybody very far behind! |
|
Standard #4-- Educational Programs |
1. |
While our curriculum is good, there are certain departments (i.e. tech ed, business ed.) who should be allowed to expand to feed the interests of students. I would love to see a PC repair course in this high school, but I doubt I ever will because we don't have the support to expand. Also, when there is money to build a football field, there should be money for new books for students to use. Also, I know this is a stretch, but many schools have made the initial investment (Cedar Cliff High School in particular) to provide all students with laptops, while it is an investment, the students then can have eBooks and such and they are maintained with the help of students who volunteer with the IT staff. |
2. |
I personally think we need a better technical curriculum, and that we should update to mac computers, because windows can virus' pretty easily, and need updates and check-ups every so often, and mac's don't and they run quite efficiently and meets the needs for everyone. |
3. |
Materials aren't always up-to-date, and other materials aren't available. For example, next year, one of the classes I have presently will have a book short, and the teacher was instructed to "fake" the missing books, despite the curriculum depending on that book. |
4. |
This curriculum is one of the worst in the country. There is not enough A.P. courses offered. When such courses are offered stupid students don't take them. I am not getting the education i need at this school. There isn't even A.P. Physics! You guys must help this problem, it is a huge problem in the school. |
5. |
i think the school could be better in getting more up to date books for the students to learn from. |
6. |
In my opinion, when it comes to our school being up to date with everything, that’s not exactly their best |
7. |
8. Some of the books, such as English and Literature and books like Algebra and Geometry are way out of date and overlap. 10. Kids learn different and need different teaching methods and ways of learning. |
8. |
I like the activities we do in the classroom that helps with my learning |
9. |
I enjoy all of the things we get to learn in each class. |
10. |
the classes are easier to understand than what they were in the other grades |
11. |
All my teachers are very good at explaining things. |
12. |
Mr. Heiser is the best |
13. |
we simply need to update our curriculum |
14. |
I really don't know what curriculum means that is why i put don't know. |
|
Standard #5-- Learning Media Services and Technology |
1. |
Like I said before, there are departments who could really offer some up to date classes, but they lack the support to improve. Also, the courses such as Computer Apps. should be able to supply student with a Microsoft Office certification upon completion which will make a huge difference when the reach the work force. |
2. |
12) I think the teachers try their hardest to teach research skills, but my experience has shown that many people lack these skills anyway. I think the attitudes and family life of students make teachers fight an uphill battle for this. |
3. |
I think that the library could have more media services. |
4. |
Good C++ classes, however the media arts classes aren't the best, because not to be rude, but it seems like the kids know more than the teachers, and some kids still do not know how to type. |
5. |
The library and its staff are wonderful and very helpful...the extra hours it's open after school come in handy quite often. I feel my research skills are developed but my technology abilities are lacking. |
6. |
Love the library! They are so helpful. |
7. |
The media center has only enough computers for one class to be in there. There isn't a place for students to find information quick for a class if there is a class in the media center already. |
8. |
the school makes it very difficult for someone to check out a book from the library making students less willing to do research there. the teachers don’t exactly explain the correct ways to research things and pretty much let students do their own thing. |
9. |
Library services are not always available. |
10. |
i think the libraries needs books in spanish for hispanic people |
11. |
The computers are slow which slows down the number of things you can search in a amount of time. |
12. |
We have a lot of resources that we can use for projects and other needed things for classes. |
13. |
We have the best librarian in the world at our high school. |
14. |
most. |
15. |
The librarian is the best in the district!!! and we have courses that give us the research and technology skills. |
16. |
the library allows you to get information and use their resources |
17. |
In my personal opinion I think some modules in the Ex In Tech class should be updated like the learning videos which were made in the 80's. |
18. |
Never been to the library yet. |
19. |
there are a lot of books in the library. |
20. |
you need a pass to go to the library and can't just go when you need to |
|
Standard #6-- Student Services |
1. |
The food service due to the state wellness program seems to have dipped a bit in quality. Yes, some particular meals have improved however overall I feel as if the food is insufficient. Also the "snack shack" seems to be a little out of the state wellness programs agenda. |
2. |
I have been in several situations where I don't believe that the counselors provide students with the appropriate guidance and support; however, I do feel that the teachers provide guidance and support. I do not think that our school really provides and any activities that encourage career awareness. The army comes in and recruits, but besides that I'm not sure. |
3. |
There was one time that my throat was hurting and it was flared and red and all the nurse did for me was give me a tylenol, and the athletic trainer isn't doing their job proficiently because one time my friend had a concussion and they told him to lie down, in the shade of a tree. |
4. |
I feel I get no guidance from my guidance counselor and sometimes even feel resistance when I go to talk to him to fix my schedule, approach him about an opportunity or actually receive guidance in scheduling, career opportunities, etc. |
5. |
For question 15, Like i said before, air and heating problem. |
6. |
I don't understand why we just get fed 4 mozzeralle sticks and they think it will be good enough for us. I feel that we should have good food. |
7. |
Our school lunches are not balanced. We get junky food, and as a diabetic, I find pizza and tater tots to not follow the diabetic diet. They do not see that the food is fit for any health problem. |
8. |
The lunches don't seem very nutritional |
9. |
The counselors could do a better job with providing support for students, they could also throw career awareness a little further out to reach the students. The schools food could be more nutritional and they could also take away some of the junk food they are provided for students because students don’t each lunch. |
10. |
the food at the school isn’t of the best quality and we don’t quite get the amount of food needed for some students here. |
11. |
not always a very nutritious meal. |
12. |
i have to walk to school i do not like the fact that i do not have bus to go on i live about a couple of blocks away. |
13. |
The food choices, like french fries and pizza, are not very nutritious. |
14. |
Some teachers help students when they need help but some don't. If the teacher doesn't like you then they won't help you they will ignore you. I have seen it happen. |
15. |
All i have to say on this topic is I love school lunch!!! |
16. |
16. Don't ride a bus. I drive. 17. Burgers, chicken nuggets, hot dogs every weak. I don't think that is a very nutritious meal. |
17. |
Sometimes some of the food is gross, and kind of unhealthy. |
18. |
The school is saying the comply with the wellness act, i think that’s what its called, yet they sell cookies and other junk items at the "snack shack" |
19. |
Most of us don't really know what we want to do yet so teachers can't help us yet with careers. Also the food is sometimes unidentifiable. |
20. |
Most 9th graders don't know what they want to do when they get to college or if they even want to go to college |
21. |
We need to get better food, but most of the food can stay but some id just not appetizing. |
22. |
I don’t like the food but our lunch ladies are the best!!!! I LOVE YOU LINDA!!! |
23. |
One time on a band trip my one friend had attack and the trip was in ohio but the teacher never told her parents about her attack. which it was in their place to call her parents, but they didn't. |
24. |
the buses are bad and the food is horrible. It’s all junk. |
25. |
We have surprisingly good food for being in school. We are given different fruits and vegetables every day. |
26. |
Sometimes the school lunches are fatty and greasy. One day we had bread sticks as a main course. |
27. |
there isn’t enough food and it doesn’t always seem healthy |
28. |
the food s---s! most of the time since we always eat the same foods every week |
29. |
The food s---s! |
30. |
The food s---s! |
31. |
lunch is not that healthy and is very slim |
32. |
some of the food is good |
33. |
smelly kids can’t ride? |
34. |
i live 5 minutes away from school and the bus ride takes 35 and about the school food i don’t think that any of the meat is ground beef |
35. |
i think we need seat belts in the buses. |
|
Standard #7-- Student Life and Student Activities |
1. |
As I've mentioned before, there are some students who are treated unfairly because they are known as "trouble students" which is inappropriate, all students deserve a chance despite their history. Yes, you can only get burned so many times, but the more respect a teacher gives the more willing a student will be to listen. |
2. |
Other than going to plays for English I'm not sure what student activities take place outside the classroom. |
3. |
there are lots of students that do not have respect for the teacher or they get out of their seat and cause problems. |
4. |
not all teachers really care they just give a packet and make you get it done in a day and if you don’t do bad and then give a quiz on it. |
5. |
Teachers show respect to students but again if they don't like you they will be rude and not help you. |
6. |
18. Coaches at least for baseball aren't fair. Too much politics and they are easily influenced by other people whose sons play. |
7. |
some teachers don't show any respect |
8. |
all activities are a lot of fun |
9. |
All of the activities are fun. |
10. |
We have a great variety of sports here. |
11. |
Selinsgrove football teaches you not only a great game but how to grow as a person and how to grow as a team. |
12. |
Again, some teachers in my opinion shouldn't be teaching if they don't care about their students and only favor a select few. I think that If they really want to be a teacher they should care about all students. |
13. |
i think we need to do more activities |
14. |
I don't like the block scheduling, because it doesn't make sense to stay in class for longer than an hour. This loses our alertness in class. |
15. |
most of the students and teachers do not get along |
|
Standard #8-- Facilities |
1. |
air conditioning that works would be nice |
2. |
I think the school is very well cleaned. I suggest that we add individual trash cans in each stall in the girls restroom. Both the Intermediate School and the Middle School have these, why not the High School? |
3. |
I know it will cost a bit of money, and a lot of repairing, but I think we need a better heating and cooling system in our school, we spend so much on the football field, but not so much in the school, we also need to upgrade to mac's, and I know of some classes having 2 students and some having 40... |
4. |
We need more classroom space. |
5. |
This comment is for question 21. Yeah clean, NO. It’s gross. Tampons on the back of bathroom seats. Its gross. Dirty desk tops and gum everywhere. |
6. |
The school is clean, but there is always room for improvement. There is not enough space for some sports. A great example is track. How in my school hurdlers have to run hurdles in the hallway. The track is nice, but an indoor track would be very much appreciated. Even though I am not taking A.P. courses until I am a junior, the fact that my school can't offer some, because of lack of participation really makes me mad. Like A.P. chem.. requires 15 people and we can barely get like 10. |
7. |
I think 29-30 students in one class is too much for one teacher to handle. |
8. |
They should have less students in one class and more teachers on the same subject so they have more one on one with the students. That way they can get extra help and the can get better grades. |
9. |
one of my class rooms have a lot more then there should be it gets hard to pay attention. |
10. |
i believe that the school could do a better job with the quality of supplies at the school. computers are left unfixed leaving students with obstacles to overcome before completing required work often resulting in late work or unnecessary homework. |
11. |
i prefer a small class. |
12. |
Some of the classes have a major over load problem. |
13. |
Some classes like gym have to many people in it |
14. |
There are 34 kids in one of my classes. |
15. |
Classes can sometimes be too big. |
16. |
Who cares how many students are in a classroom as long as your learning. |
17. |
Some of my classes this year are very large. In one class the teacher had to bring extra desks into the room so there were enough seats for everyone. I find that the more students there are in my classes the less I tend to learn do to the fact that some of my teachers can't control the class. |
18. |
Some classes there are many students, and at times, when there's too many students it's hard to learn at my best ability and focus. |
19. |
the school is old so some of the stuff is outdated and rotting but it is an alright environment |
20. |
The school is old, so some the stuff is outdated and rotting but it's a good environment to learn. |
21. |
Sometimes you can find gum under desks but not all the time. |
22. |
JIMMY IS THE BEST janitor ever!!! |
23. |
I sometimes wonder if this school has replaced anything in the last 30 years!! |
24. |
some bath rooms are horrible. |
25. |
The school is filthy not clean at all..... |
26. |
i like how the classes are sorted |
27. |
fungus in mat room some classes have too little, some too many |
28. |
most students are reasonable |
29. |
no. |
30. |
my gym class is humongous and mrs. corbin’s carpet is black and pulling up and i trip over it |
31. |
some of the flooring here in the high school is rather disgusting... |
|
Standard #9-- Health and Safety |
1. |
There should be a first aid kit in every classroom so that in the event of something a student might not have to leave the room and go all the way down to the nurse for a band-aid. |
2. |
the school has us covered really well. |
3. |
they do have a good system for in case of emergency. and most students feel safe but all students should feel really safe. |
4. |
the fire drills are fun but also effective |
5. |
The fire drills are effective and fun. |
6. |
We have a safe environment. |
7. |
there are kids in class who are disrupted and not taken care of. |
8. |
We are taught what to do in case of a tornado, or fire etc. |
9. |
they have a fire drill when needed |
10. |
No |
|
Standard #10-- Finances |
1. |
band and chorus should get the money from their concerts |
2. |
Seriously, you think that the musical department has enough money?? Especially since the money grubbing school district makes us sell our tickets through the main office so that we no longer have the funds necessary to provide for the artists that provide student experience |
3. |
I calculated this, and granted I could be wrong, but the funding that goes into our football team is a huge amount, but we have other things that we need more other than a new field, some teachers need speakers for their computers, new projector screens, etc. we need to learn how to spend better. |
4. |
freakin' football field sucking up funds from the art department, band, books, everything that's educational!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
5. |
I think recently there has been a lot more money put into the football program and nothing else that actually needs it, like the lunch program. I realize that football is a pretty big thing here but not everyone is in it. |
6. |
$2 million on a football field? |
7. |
Most activities and programs at my school are well-funded; other programs are lacking funding and their funding is being slowly taken away or redirected so it makes it very hard to obtain the adequate funding. |
8. |
some programs are really well funded l, but other programs need funding. |
9. |
Much of the funding is used towards activities such as sports. They should use more of the funds towards more educational things. |
10. |
i agree on this topic, but then again i kind of disagree for the simple fact that when my teacher has plans on going on a trip most of the time we can’t because there's never any money |
11. |
A lot of my teachers say we don't have enough money to do things, or go on field trips. We spend a lot of money on things like football fields, instead of using the money to profit our learning abilities. |
12. |
because last year we had to cut reading |
13. |
last year they had to cut reading. |

Standard#11-- Assessment of Student Learning |
1. |
Some teachers are better at communicating how I am doing than others. |
2. |
If I'm doing well in my classes, I really don't hear anything from my teachers until that takes a turn for the worse. |
3. |
Question 29 comment. They don’t tell you until you start failing! |
4. |
The communication between grades in my school is decent , but could be far better. |
5. |
Teachers seem to have their favorites and if you’re not one then they completely ignore you and seem to give their favorites a break and they give the others problems. |
6. |
i do get the help i need but at the same time my opinion is that all the teachers have favorites no matter what. i'm not saying they don't like other students but teachers have favorite and the other students are just students in the school. |
7. |
some students don't try to do their best and most of them don't worry about their grades and don’t take the time to get a good education |
8. |
not all teachers really care how you are doing. |
9. |
students must normally ask to see grades and their progress in classes. |
|
|
10. |
27. Some kids just don't care, therefore they fail. 28. Some teachers (Geometry) think its your fault you do bad, but they talk to the chalkboard and can't even teach well. |
11. |
Not many of my teachers talk to me about my grades, or how good or bad I am doing in their class. |
12. |
i do very well in all classes and the teacher are very good about telling our grades if we need to get them up |
13. |
I do very well in all of my classes and the teachers let us know if we are doing good by posting our grades. |
14. |
I know how I am doing in all my classes. |
15. |
Teachers give us progress reports and sometimes explain what they expect of us if we're not doing as well as they feel we should. |
16. |
There are some teachers who don’t accept responsibility. |
17. |
i always ask for help |
Standard #12-- Planning
(none)
|
Input on Survey |
1. |
It didn't cover our opinions on how the administration runs student govt., which is important, because it could change and/or be vanquished. |
2. |
I think one thing that our school could practice more of is consistency. Why do some rules apply only for certain people and not others? There is a girl in my class who has gotten away with wearing spaghetti strap tank tops several times yet when another student wore one they were asked to change. |
3. |
I think that overall that Selinsgrove has a good program. However, there are some things that I think could be improved. |
4. |
this school needs to stop the alcoholics |
5. |
I think you should ask if you think that students are treated differently on popularity and how rich your family is and how active you are in the school. |
6. |
More on sports and classes. |
7. |
the other problems at this school is the fact that there are too many fights going on in this school. i also feel that giving more money to the school to buy new material for the school like cheerleading uniforms which we need. |
8. |
It didn't really cover how the teachers treat the students and how we felt about the teachers picked for the jobs. |
9. |
They need air conditioning! In all rooms!!! |
10. |
I do not like block scheduling because I need a wider range of classes in one day and I do not like sitting in class for an hour |
11. |
they need or be more hard on the kids in the lower levels of classes. like the 11 graders with the 9th graders, they always interrupt class and never pay attention and then the ones who want to learn don't because of the 11 graders or the higher classmates. |

1 . All Teachers should be required to meet performance standards. Mediocre teachers, poor teachers, and teachers that take the easy way really do damage to students by depriving the student a quality education.
2. SAHS needs to improve the air quality and comfort to create a better learning environment. SAHS needs to be more supportive of teacher recommendations pertaining to curriculum and needed equipment for students that will best support the curriculum that best prepares the student for specific subject areas. (i.e. lowest bid technology)
3. HVAC- Poor conditions impact student learning building security. Building is much too easy to enter.
4. I am totally impressed with SAHS
6. Do more about the music program, don’t always give it the back seat.
10. I feel the Selinsgrove School District has a great education curriculum. One thing that has always puzzled me thou in regards to safety is, why don’t your school buses have safety belts installed for each student. If a bus were to get into an accident you would have a whole bus load of kids flying around. Pennsylvania has a safety belt law, but it’s not enforced for school buses. I just feel this should be enforced. As a parent I tend to worry about this. it's double standard that’s been over locked
13. SAHS needs less focus on the football team and more focus on getting over students. what they need in the classroom such as a real bio lab --not a make shift out of a history room. Walls that are painted not cracking. We could also need a heating system that works and a conditioner for when it gets hot
14. You should let the students know more about what programs SUN Vo-Tech offers for those who are not going to college or that plan to join the work force. Business math is overlooked and algebra is stressed too much. Business math teaches basics we use in life like balancing checkbooks.
15. being safe and being strong
16. Question #3 mentions Academic Performance which is important but it would be good to focus on other abilities too, such as mechanical ability or working with hands.
17. SASD can improve what it does by: assuring that the well paid teachers and administrators are doing what they are supposed to do. Being too comfortable breeds a complacent staff. All above items should be being accomplished now.
18. I believe the safety of the students is important but that we should not take away simple freedoms that we have. What we have now is good. An example is the middle school. They are too strict and are punishing students for stupid reasons.
19. needs to look at the person they are and not their name or how much money their parents or family has - queens and sports activities--
20. We would perform better if the a/c and heat would work.
21. Add courses that develop skills in the use of technology like computer software. Students are not adequately prepared for the work place or college.
22. Significant improvement could be seen by actually using ALL academic time available on academic pursuits. Too much time is spent on busy work, watching movies and having parties!! The other area of concern is the lack of involvement, concern and GUIDANCE from the guidance counselors. (ie planning course selection and post hs preparation)
23. Teachers need to be evaluated better. Students are given very little opportunity to provide input on the quality of teachers. Teachers are allowed to disrespect students. Teachers are allowed to be lazy. Quality teachers need to be rewarded.
24. You need to monitor what goes on in the classroom under your own roof--teachers play favorites, teachers are discriminatory, teachers do things that they should not do, they use language that is not appropriate. I also think you should survey all students and parents as students graduate to improve the school system.
25. In light of the recent school violence activities taking place around the country and the recent break-ins at the High School, I feel that the security of the school, students, faculty and staff, should not be overlooked and something should be done immediately to eliminate the easily accessible area in the rear of the school which has resulted in the loss of equipment that taxpayers are paying for in one way or another. I am also concerned with the current progession of the math students. Not all students are cut out to be in Algebra class and at this time it is a make or break situation. I am not comfortable with the thought that a student has to follow this course.
26. I would like to see improvements within the school as far as possibly new paint(some areas paint is chipping off walls)air conditioning systems. Just an overall maintenance facelift. I think security is also a major issue. I think some type of front door security is a must, as it is now anyone can walk in and often not be approached by any staff or security. Tue, 10/17/06 5:34 AM 27. I was recently told that you don't need your parents’ permission to quit school at the age of 16, how that is I don't know since you are not considered an adult until the ripe old age of 18. I think that is your way of weeding out the kids you have a hard time with in school, instead of taking the time to work with them or helping them in the areas they are having problems with. You make it too easy for them to give up.
28. Schools exist to provide additional and specific educational training as a supplement to what occurs at home. Parents are ultimately responsible for a child's ability to read, write, and do basic math. Parents need to instill in their children the moral values that they need to function in a polite society. But more than anything else, parents need to stop enabling their children and stop creating children who know nothing other than a sense of entitlement, who feel that they are the most special people in the world, and that they can do no wrong. In short, a public school can and must augment the work begun by parents, it can and must continue the work parents have started, but the public school cannot take the place of a responsible and caring parent.
29. Even though there are efforts to promote understanding of diversity and tolerance, there is still a great divide between the students who are popular and from families with strong resources and those students who come from disadvantaged homes. More sensitivity programming especially at the high school level would be beneficial. As an employer, I also find that graduates are not as strong as they should be with the written language. Some graduates are weak in using proper sentence structure, grammar, and paragraph layout. Of course, a lot depends on the specific teacher that the student was assigned.
30. -being safe -being strong
31. SAHS needs to focus on math. Kids should have to take it each year, I was not ready for college math even though I took up through trig. Put the money in classes not more sports.
32. SAHS needs to have more diversity in the classroom. What I mean is stop teaching to a test, but teach to the student’s ability.
33.Provide opportunities for creative thinking, problem-solving and hands-on learning in all academic disciplines. 34. Discipline
35. I think that the HS should work on the a/c and heater, I think that sometimes I get distracted in class because of the warmness and coldness at times.
36. I'm not sure how these questions relate to accreditation - they seem too general. Here is a specific concern - two years ago the school board increased the athletics budget by $50,000 to a total of $500,000. In the same budget, the board zeroed out the annual contribution to the Snyder County Library, which at the time was only $2,000. This sends the wrong message to the students and to the community that sports are more important than reading. I support the school sports programs by attending games, contributing to the booster clubs and buying items from the team members who solicit door to door in my neighborhood. I also do not object to supporting athletics through my taxes, but the above-referenced scenario was very troubling to me.
37. Better PSSA scores and meeting the requirements of No Child Left Behind should be your primary focus until you are doing both, which recent news stories indicate you are not. Top 10 football is a proud achievement, but it loses a lot when you're running a below-average school (which it was not in my day). Design surveys with a real neutral answer, other than "I don't know" or "I don't care." I may know, and care, but neither agree nor disagree.
38. While preparing our child for the High School, we chose to attend a meeting with others. While we are all for college, it was an extremely disappointing evening when the emphasis was solely based on that. We wondered, is this just for college bound students? Shouldn't it be for all students? The attitude of those not going to college, was full of dismay. Some of those parents perhaps didn't attend college, but enjoy what they do. We would, yes, like details on college, but would like to also see everyone included. When we give an attitude that some are more important than others, because of job status, we send messages that in our opinion are prejudice. By the way, we do have 1 in college, and one that will be going.
39. I believe the air quality (i.e. Air conditioning) needs major updating within the high school, also more healthy, and better tasting meals, not just with whole grain bread, but home-made meals as opposed to microwave meals.
40. I feel that the sports get enough attention, and no more should be given. It’s a privilege to play and if it were up to me I wouldn't have sports, to save the school and taxpayers money and concentrate more on school work. If the coaches put forth as much effort in a class room as they do on a sport team, there would be more efficiency. Also, no more attention should be given to minorities. I'm not racist in any way, but they get away with a lot just because they play the race card in school too, and teachers fear this so they get away with a lot more than anyone else can, and a lot of students are fed up with their loud mouths, cursing in school hallways, and trying to put fear in other sudents through there "Gangsta" acts. Something needs to be done.
41. I would like to see improved methods of teaching our students how to study and how to learn outside of the classroom.
42. Renovations of the heating/air conditioning systems to make the learning environment more comfortable for students and teachers. Building additions so that every faculty member has a room of their own. Reorganization of resource periods so that advisors do not need coverage every time they meet with their clubs/activities.
