Child Development and the Selinsgrove Children's Center, what a team. Thanks to our new partnership, all high school students, prior to graduation, will complete two required observations in the Children's Center. The first is a minimum of forty-five minutes observing in the Infant and Toddler area where they observe and document observed developments in four major areas of development: physical, social, emotional, and intellectual. The second is really a 90 minute "hands on" in the Preschool area. After this observation, a write up is completed based on observations in the same four areas
Also, there are two new enrichment options available to all Child Development students. One is the "Reading to Children" program which provides an opportunity for students to focus on the skills necessary for effective reading to children. Such skills are tone of voice, rate of speaking, and involving the child in the story. The second option is the "Big Friends" program which allows a student to spend time with the Kinder Kare children. Each "Big Friend" maintains a journal, describing each visit and submitting it for grading at the end of each marking period.
Students may also utilize the Children's Center for their gradation project, provided they have successfully completed Child Development.
