The Athens Acropolis

Inside the Acropolis many different examples of Greek architecture are presented in the form of elegant ancient ruins. The three different orders (styles) of Greek architecture, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian can all be found in or near the Athens Acropolis. The flat-topped rock encountered many stages of development throughout history but ultimately became the center of worship. The Athens Acropolis begins at its monumental gateway, the Propylaea. Inside significant structures still partialy stand such as the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. Not far from the acropolis is the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Each of these monuments are a sample of one of the three orders of Greek architecture. This may be why the Acropolis of Athens is considered the most representative of all the acropolises.
