What is going on in Civil War

     In this unit we will be looking at the causes and outcomes of the Civil War in America. In addition there are some student worksheets which are password protected and are intended for the use of our students only. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation on a major battle during the Civil War. The class will also be responsible for a letter home, stations web quest as well as the traditional reading assigments, quizzes and the test. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are: 5.1.12L, 5.2.12, 5.3.12, 7.3.12B, 7.4.12E, 8.1.12. 8.4.12.

Theme: Cotton and its Effects
Assign Portfolio – Not Gettysburg or Bull Run
Define Ante-Bellum on the board: “The time in America just prior to the Civil War.”
Put up lists of Presidents (11 thru 16) and then list of President Historical Rank
Go over Cotton Revolution overhead – tie in importance of cotton to slavery and southern economy. Have students come up to overhead and describe what they notice…
Cotton Gin and its inventor, How did this invention effect cotton production in the south?Discuss movement and numbers of slaves using overheads as a guide (also refer to % of slaves handout)
CIVIL WAR DISK – side one (segments one and two) Slavery and Confronting the South Use questions on page 13 as a guide
Show PIX of slave home
Assign: 224-25 “Enslaved African-Americans Resist” and 250-51 “Calls for Immediate Abolition”, write down the importance of rebellions and abolitionist.

Read and discuss Reinforcement Worksheet 4, page 15 in class
Define Abolitionist and three types (Radical, Active, and Passive)
Read Underground RR Overview Essay and put overhead of Quilt Code on overhead
Discuss importance of Rebellions and Abolitionists (see notes)
Have students work in pairs and generate a list of criteria for each compromise (use pages 180-181 and 303-304 as a guide)
Discuss Compromises of 1820 and 1850
Assign: Look through pages Ch 11 sec 1-3 and write importance of: Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Kansas-Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Sumner, and Dred Scott Case

Ask “How did Lincoln’s election impact the country?”

Have class describe the Battle of Bull Run
Flash on Battle of Bull Run
Look at “Dear Sarah” letter and play track #28 of Civil War CD while students read along
Assign: Write a letter to a loved one as if you were just about to enter the Battle of Bull Run Due Day 12. Read ch 12 sec 2. Letter due day 9.

Discuss Actions of Lincoln and if he was a good or bad President
Have students set up the stage of Lincoln’s assassination and tell the story. When one gets stuck, have another take over… “Sic Semper Tyrannis, the South is avenged) (Thus to tyrannts…)

Theme: The Freedmen’s Bureau and end of Reconstruction
Review Amendments
Read 477-478
Discuss Carpetbaggers and Scalawags (p371)
Assign students to read the “Freedman’s Bureau Commission” worksheet, then grade Reconstruction in regards to the rights/freedoms that the Freedman had based on the reading. Grades (A-F) are then reported to class. Groups must rationalize their grades. ( 5.3.12)
Put main ideas on board and discuss: Poll Tax, Literacy Test, KKK, Grandfather Clause, and Lost in interest in South, Fed. Troops pulled out, sep. but equal, Plessy v. Ferguson, Jim Crow Laws
Tie in All white stuff good – they feel superior. All black stuff bad – they feel inferior
