Civil War

In this unit we will be looking at the causes and outcomes of the Civil War in America. In addition there are some student worksheets which are password protected and are intended for the use of our students only. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation on a major battle during the Civil War. The class will also be responsible for a letter home, stations web quest as well as the traditional reading assigments, quizzes and the test. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are: 5.1.12L, 5.2.12, 5.3.12, 7.3.12B, 7.4.12E, 8.1.12. 8.4.12.

Theme: Cotton and its Effects Assign Portfolio – Not Gettysburg or Bull Run Define Ante-Bellum on the board: “The time in America just prior to the Civil War.” Put up lists of Presidents (11 thru 16) and then list of President Historical Rank Go over Cotton Revolution overhead – tie in importance of cotton to slavery and southern economy. Have students come up to overhead and describe what they notice… Cotton Gin and its inventor, How did this invention effect cotton production in the south?Discuss movement and numbers of slaves using overheads as a guide (also refer to % of slaves handout) CIVIL WAR DISK – side one (segments one and two) Slavery and Confronting the South Use questions on page 13 as a guide Show PIX of slave home Assign: 224-25 “Enslaved African-Americans Resist” and 250-51 “Calls for Immediate Abolition”, write down the importance of rebellions and abolitionist.
