In this web quest you'll be examining different aspects of the later-half of the Civil War. This web quest is very specific to what we are teaching our students in class, so if you are from another district and looking for a Civil war web quest then follow this link. Students will be broken up into groups of 2-4. In these groups students will be expected to answer the 8 questions below concerning the Civil War from 1863-1865. Create a chart comparing and contrasting the Confederate general Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

For this question we will need to read the following links on the Blockade, Duel between the Monitor and Merrimac, and the first submarine. We are now going to examine how the lives of ordinary were affected by the war. By now it has hopefully become apparent that most of the fighting took place in the South, with this in mind what was life like at home for the people living in the North? South?

Though the experiences of soldiers during the Civil War truly varied from place to place, I would like you to read about some of those experiences at Billy Yank and Johnny Reb site. First read about the similiarites between the soldiers of the North and South at this site. Now read about the experiences the soldiers had during the war. When done write a paragraph about the similiarities between the soldiers, such as: the type of person who fought in the war for both sides(age, race, etc..) and include the daily routine of a soldier during this war(drills, entertainment, etc..).

There were hundreds of battles fought during the Civil War, in fact, early in the war almost all the battles were fought between the Union capitol of Washington DC and Confederate capitol of Richmond only 100 miles away. Two important battles during this time period are the battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. For this question explain, in seperate paragraphs, why the Battle of Vicksburg and the Battle of Gettysburg were such important battles to the Union? South?

The Union had many Generals that were responsible for helping win the Civil War. One of the most hated, by southern standards, was General Sherman. Who was General Sherman? What is total war? What do you think about his "March to the Sea" orders (at this link scroll down to the section titled Headquarters Military Division of the Mississippi, in the Field, Kingston, Georgia, November 9, 1864.?

After many years of fighting a long and difficult war the North finally wins and General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse. After reading this page answer the following question in a paragraph: Do you agree with how Grant and Lee decided to end the War? Why or Why not?
