What is going on in Colonial America
In this unit we will be exploring the colonization of America with the primary focus on reasons for settling in the New World, problems with settlement, beginnings of slave in America, and the first colonial governments. In this site there are a variety of media and links that we will be using during the unit that you can view and print if necessary. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation, for this unit on the first Thanksgiving. The class will also be responsible for a quilt writing assignment, as well as the traditional reading assigments, quizzes and the test. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are: 5.2.12, 6.2.12,6.3.12A/D, 6.4.12, 7.3.12, 7.4.12, 8.1.12. 8.4.12.

Theme: Introduction Books, Seats, handout all papers for the beginning of the year Review pages 402-405 in Black book Brainstormed list of possible problems the first settlers would encounter Played podcast in class about the problems that faced settelers at Jamestown Knowing what you found out in the hardships podcast create an advertisement to get people to go to the New World (post in Heiser Blog) Assign Portfolio: 4 students recreate the first Thanksgiving. Theme: Religious Intolerance around the colonies Bellringer: Define Intolerance and Tolerance. How much deviance from accepted behavior should society tolerate? Ask: “Why did so many people want to come to America?” –One ans. =religious persecution. Using Smart board create a chart or Venn diagram of the patterns of the 3 religious groups using Skrbl Mayflower Compact (agreement to be submissive to King James, but set up their own legal government) See the Plimoth Plantation Groups of 2: list reasons why the French/Dutch had a better relationship with the Tribal Americans than the British (blog) Map of 13 colonies Assign: Read Chpt 3 sec 3 and do GRR sec 3

Theme: Indentured servants and the hardships of Servitude Collect Maps Talked about indentured servants and problems with indentured servants in the early part of colonization and its impact on slavery in America Showed Pictures of Slave ship; briefly discuss Middle Passage Showed clip from Amistad Break class into 5 groups. Each group is responsible for summarizing one of the sub sections from Chpt 3 sec 3. Rearrange groups so that at 1 member is an expert. Have students take turns discussing their topic with the larger group. When completed, assign each student to do a creative writing as if they were an African who was brought over to America and is now working as a slave. They should write it on the “quilt paper”. We will create a slave quilt on Day 6 at the beginning of the class using everyone’s writings. Assign: Chpt 3 sec 1 and 2

Navigation Acts: placed restrictions on colonial trade (could only buy or sell certain goods with England) and discussed the significance of both Worked in groups to generate a list of reasons for salutary neglect discussed Put up overhead of and briefly discuss how Triangular Trade works Worked on Presentations for tomorrow Assign: Read ch 3 sec 4
