What is going on in Imperialism

     In this unit we will be looking at the causes and effects of Imperialism on Africa, China, and islands in the Pacific. In this unit there are a variety of media and links that we will be using during the unit that you can view and print if necessary. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation. This will be the last portfolio for the course. The class will also be responsible for a web quest on Africa and China, as well as the traditional reading assigments, quizzes and the test. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are: 5.2.12, 6.2.12,6.3.12A/D, 6.4.12, 7.3.12, 7.4.12, 8.1.12. 8.4.12.

List on the board the results of the Spanish-American War: (p.502)
Cuba=independent, Puerto Rico and Guam=controlled by US,
Philippines=paid $20million to Spain to take control
Discuss: How did Pulitzer and Hearst cause this war? (yellow journalism)(p501)
Does this still occur today?
Students are to either draw an image or write an article, similar to Pulitzer’s or
Hearst’s style, that would cause a war/conflict in today’s society.

Start class in groups
Pass out Charades Topics – students are to work for 5 mins. They should work very quietly for they don’t want anyone else to know what their topic is.
Group will act out topic using no words, merely sounds and gestures
2 mins. Presentation max.
Class guesses what concept/event they are doing – hands up
We looked at the impact of Imperialism on the world this unit. One of those changes were cultural. (White Man’s Burden)… In order to understand others’ culture, we have to live it… By adopting their culture, we increase and better our culture.
