What is going on in Industrialization

     In this unit we will be looking at the of Industrialization on the world. In addition there are some student worksheets which are password protected and are intended for the use of our students only. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation as well as a family tree. The class will also be responsible for writing an editorial, a Union Interview, as well as the traditional reading assigments, quizzes and the test. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are:5.2.12B, 5.2.12B; 5.3.12B, 6.1.12, 6.5.12A, 7.3.12B, 7.4.12B, 8.1.12, 8.4.12.

Day 1














Theme: Industrializations Roots
Assign Portfolios (due Day 13)
Assign Family Tree (due Day 13)
Define Industrialization – The change from Agriculture to Industry
ASK – “Who was first?” - GB – 1750 this time period lasts until 1900 - “Why so long?”
Compare to US – 1889 – income from manu. goods more than Ag. goods for 1st time 1894 – US world’s leading industrial power
“What do you need to industrialize?” Rows have 3 minutes to come up with list
Discuss lists (Natural Resources, Population-Workers, Inventions-ideas, $-Capital)
Population – US pop. in 1860=31 million. By 1900=75 million - WHY?
1859 – First Oil Well – Titusville, PA Edwin Drake (show map and booklet)
Students pull out lists from homework – put on board pos and neg effects of industrialization
Was Industrialization Good or Bad? - We will discuss for the next 2 weeks…
Assign: Ch 22 Sec 1 and answer #6 on page 562 AND Map of Europe

Theme: Life in the Early Industrial Age
Review #6 on page 562, then Ask “Was life good or bad during this time?”
Bell Ringer and Focus on page 516
Ch 20 sec 3 worksheet(six groups)
At end of class students show class their images and explain
If time: Close on page 516
Assign: Read The Jungle

Theme: Effects of Industrialization
Review Jungle
Overhead of 1998 Food Standards List
Read Life in NYC Tenement out loud and discuss
Show VR of tenement. laid out the dimensions of one in class
Read City of Wilderness out loud and discuss – Venn diagram 1890’s and Contemporary gangs
Assign: Blue Book: Ch 16 sec 3 and write an editorial about city life (explain what that means)


Day 4









Theme: American Industrialization
Collect editorials
Answered the following questions: “Was life great in Industrial America?”
“Why would a person want to leave all of these great things in Europe?”
“Why does American population double from 1860 (31 mil) to 1900 (75 mil)?”
Watch video – did handout it played…
Answered: “What is so ironic about immigrants’ expectations of America?
Assign: Blue Book – Ch 16 sec 2, Parent interview on Unions using guide sheet – Due Day 8


Day 5







Theme: Immigration and its hardships
Review ideas of immigrant’s life based on yesterday
Brief discussion of Ellis Island
Activity on page 451 (blue book) – add the info slips of paper (4 groups)
In reality: 32 questions in 2 mins.
Assign: Blue Book: Ch 14 sec 2 and handout p.22 (critical thinking)


Day 6










Theme: Monopolies by Vertical and Horizontal Consolidation
Play monopoly
Completed Monopoly worksheet
Intro Horizontal Consolidation – into discuss Rockefeller
Gov’t Policy allowed this? Laissez-Faire
Are there any monopolies today? (Wal-Mart, Microsoft, Sheetz)

Theme: Philanthropy and Economic Systems

Overhead of world’s richest people, Richest Americans
Show Biltmore then refer back to tenement
Review Chart from last night
Ask “Which philo. Is the best, most fair, most realistic?”
Assign: Blue Book: Ch 14 sec 4. Answer: What are Unions, How do they achieve change, why didn’t a majority of the population ever join a Union.
