What is going on Manifest Destiny

     In this unit we will be examining the idea of Manifest Destiny and what Americans thought was there right to expand from sea to sea.We will be examining the hardships of western expansion and settlement. There are a variety of media and links that we will be using during the unit that you can view and print if necessary. Some materials are password protected and are for the use of our students only. There will be an number of assessments for this unit but there will not be a portfolio or writing assignment. The class will also be responsible for all reading and homework as well as the quizzes and timelin. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are:

Day 1






Groups of 4, students evaluate Jackson’s administration on a report card.
Students give letter grade based on the four issues (be sure to explain them…)
After every group grades him, the class comes to a consensus grade.
Discuss page 234-35
Evaluate him against all the other Presidents (overhead)
Assign: Ch 10 sec 2 and handout p. 96-97

Day 2







Briefly review Oregon trail
Look at page 285 on Tombstones
Show and discuss songs on the trail (handout p. 101)
Groups of 4-5. Students compose a song as if they were on the Trail singing about life on the Oregon Trail. They will then perform their song at the end of the period.
Assign: Ch 10 sec 3 and handout p.88


Day 3








Do the Discuss on page 287. Use questions for discussion. Have students work in pairs to answer the question then review with class. Use handout p.88 and have the students create statements using the words
Discuss Manifest destiny
Why did people want to move out west? Gold
What were the perceptions of the miners that went out west – gold everywhere, get rich quick, then look at p. 98 Primary Source activity and generate a list of realities that faced the miners
Show transparency of miner
Assign : Ch 10 sec 4

Day 4




Construct a timeline of events. Starting with the Annexation of Texas and ending with the Treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo using the Rubric as a guide (Alternative Lesson Plans p.52)
Handout new materials for the Civil War to the class
Assign: Finish Timeline for tomorrow. Read Ch 11 sec 1- Ch 11 sec 3 and Dred Scott Case on 316-317 (all sections will be due Day 3 of Civil War Unit)
