What is going on in Progressivism

     In this unit we will be looking at the Progressive Era and examine how the power of the pen changed America. In addition there are some student worksheets which are password protected and are intended for the use of our students only. There will be an number of assessments for this unit some students will be doing a portfolio presentation on Womens Suffrage. The class will also be responsible for a web quest on Womens Suffrage and a Progressive Presidents newspaper. In addition, we will as the traditional reading assigments and quizzes. There won't be a test for this unit. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are: 5.2.12B, 8.1.12, 8.3.12C, 8.4.12.

Theme: Populist and the Progressive Movement
Women’s Suffrage web quest here!
Assign Portfolio – Women’s Suffrage. Students list on the board all of the problems in America around 1900 on the board based on previous classroom discussions (Industrialization, Gilded Age, Expansion)
Add: They were not the only ones who were fighting for improvements. A political party known as the Populists also fought for the end of corruption in America. They eventually died out and a new party, known as the Progressives Party took over their fight.
Pass out handouts – Chpt 19 Sec 1 and 2
Work on in class (40 mins. Max.) Then review

Assign: Write a muckraking article about life in Selinsgrove. This can be about
school, community, or home. Remind them that the goal of a muckraker is to inform the public about a problem. See rubric for details…

Repeat the process, but make certain each group gets a “new” President – so that in the end, each group has read at least one paper on each President.
