Opening the West


What is going on in The West

     In this unit we will be looking at the West and the continued hardships of settlement as well as cowboys and the gold rush. In addition there are some student worksheets which are password protected and are intended for the use of our students only. There will be a few assessments for this unit some students will be doing some quizzes and the web quest. The standards that will be assessed in this unit are:7.4.12, 8.4.12 C

Theme: Cowboys and the Oregon Trail
Ask: “What does a cowboy look like?” Generate discussion then put up various overheads
Explain that we are going to watch a video – during it, students are to write down the problems, characteristics, traits, and what was important to cowboys
Wild West Video (in Bill’s closet) - end it at the commercial right after (“It was high time to whoop it up…) (2nd or 3rd commercial…)
On board: create list of major issues of cowboy. Break class into groups of 2. Each group is responsible for writing one verse to a song about cowboys. Each group has to pick one issue/characteristic to sing about. The song should be based on the Brady Bunch Theme (sing to entire class – every 3 verses sing the refrain – “the cowboy song…”) ()
