       What is going on in Unit 4!


     Listed below are all the days and the daily lesson plans for Unit 4 on Ancient Greece. In this unit, we will examining the Greece with a concentration on Sparta and Athens. For this unit students will be starting the All Roads Lead to Rome Project. The project is worth 150 points and can be done using many different media and programs. This assignment will be due 1 month for the assigned date. The site for the Rome Project is Rome Project link here and the rubric is below. Students are expected to work on this project at home at the present time, however, there will be 2 library days in Unit 5. Some students have been assigned the Portfolio Presentation at the beginning of Unit 3. The portfolio for this unit is a magazine on either Athens or Sparta. The criteria for the magazine is below just follow the Magazine Rubric link for all the requirements.  Also, there is a Journal assignment due for this unit. Topics for the journal are found by clicking on the Study Guide link below. Click on Tutorial on Day 5 for additional studying for the exam. Stanards being assessed in this unit are: 5.2.12.A, 5.2.12.G, 8.1.12.A, 8.1.12.B, 8.1.12.C.

Introduced the long-term assignment: All roads lead to Rome. In this 
assignment the class will be doing a web quest in small groups. 
Each group of 3 will be given a different topic with questions. 
The groups are supposed to use the websites links to start their research. Once all the information is collected then the students will need to 
put together a brochure or PowerPoint presentation about their topic
Collected "Values of Sparta and Athens"
Read pg. 102
In your notes answer these questions.
1. How do they (Olympics) reflect modern international rivalries?
2. How do they (Olympics), like the ancient Greek games, help to ease international conflict?
Assigned Rivalry Paper post on Heiser blog
Discussed the early literary works of the Aegean Region and the famous poet Homer. 
Also, discussed the Trojan War and the individual responsible for discovering the ancient city of Troy. 
Reviewed "The Odyssey" handout due for today. 
Worked on  Map of Ancient Greece.
After Completing the map reviewed it in class for accuracy with teacher transparency (see completed map here).
Started looking at the similarities and differences between Sparta and Athens (brainstorming activity)
Assignment: Read Sec. 3 pages 113-116 & "Thucydides: History of the Peloponnesian War"

Handed back Athens/Sparta homework collected from yesterday
Read and discussed Herodotus paper. This is on the other side of the Athens and Sparta paper that I returned to class.
Discuss battle of Marathon and Play podcast of Battle of Thermopylae
Discuss Battle of Thermopylae and movie 300 . What is the importance of the Greek Victory over the Persians? How did the victory over
the Persians impact the formation of the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League? What impact did the rivalry between Sparta and Athen Peloponnesian War? What is the outcome of this war?
Looked at the Peloponnesian War.
Refer to page 109 on Sparta and p. 110 for Athens if you have trouble making up lines.
Need to get notes from transparency on differences between Athens and Sparta
On page 112 in the Section Review #7 (Activity) is what we did in class. This has to be no less than 5 lines for each citizen.

Assignment: Read Ch 5 sec 5, mini-lesson podcast on important figures from Greece and Hellenistic age, Answer questions on Socrates and blog on your space

Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age and thinkers from last night
The class worked on the sec 5 GRR, discussed the worksheet (discussed mini-lesson from last night) with an emphasis on Pythagoras
In notes answer the following question.
     1. Name the different ways that Greek culture has influenced the US.
Discussed two transparencies. One on the Goddess Nike and the other showing a discuss thrower. Ask classmate or teacher what they were about.
