What is going on in Unit 6!


     In this unit we will be examining the Rise of Islam. During this unit we will learn about Islam's beginnings, beliefs, spread, factions that emerged as a result of Mohammad's death, and its achievements. For this unit there is will a Portfolio Presentation for those who volunteered or were chosen to do one for this unit. There will not be a Journal assignment for this unit so enjoy the break.  In addition, there will be quizzes and a test for this unit. Below are the links to the daily lesson plans as well as study guide and rubrics for this unit. To study extra for the test click on Tutorial at Day 5. Standards being assessed in this unit are:

Listened to a tape calling Muslims out to prayer
Reviewed map of Middle East and discussed the rate of change of Christians to Islam and why that happened in the Middle East
Background information and then talked about the 5 pillars of Islamic faith. For notes and background information (Click here)
Worked in small groups. Each group was assigned a heading in Ch 11 sec 1 and asked to create an outline for their heading. (headings are the purple highlighted subsections in the reading) Reviewed in class
Use page 259 to construct a bar graph in notes of the world religions and the number of members for each religion
Answer the following question: Why did Islam have so many converts?
Assignment: Read Ch 11 sec 2

Looking at the map of page 261 answer this question: Why did Islam spread so rapidly?
In groups worked on the Guided Reading and Review for section 2.
Created a Venn Diagram comparing the Sunni, Shiite, and Sufi traditions in Islam (Use section 2 for information) Skrbl Pad
Assignment: Read Ch 11 sec 3 and Guided Reading and Review for section 3

Reviewed reading assignment and Guided Reading and Review from last night
Looked at the economy and trade network of the Muslim empire during its golden age
Read Firdawsi handout and discussed artists in early Islamic society
Create a cause and effect web on the impact of Islam in India (Use Ch 11 sec 4 for information)
