What is going on in Middle East!

     In this unit we will be examining the Middle East and it past history. Included in the unit will be the formation of Israel, Gulf War I and II. In addition we will be discussing some key figures and groups in the Middle East as well as the rights of women in the nation of Islam. After this unit there will be approximately 1-2 days to study for the WAHG 3 Final. For this unit, however, there is no test on this unit but there will be one final project before the final exam. Also, each person will be expected to put there writing skills to the test one last time when they write a letter to the Middle East. Congrats! This is your last unit of WAHG!

Students are to do the Middle East Map – use packet and atlases
Geographic Advantage Handout – do questions on the back
Middle East (Physical and Historical Settings) Packet
Review the basic geography on a dry-erase poster of the Middle East during the final 15-20 mins.
Assign: Read Ch 35 sec 2, 3

Read Women of Islam Handout and discuss
Students are to draw a two political cartoon – one from the viewpoint of the men of Islam and one from the viewpoint of American/European women about the issues. Students are then to write a letter to the head of the Islamic world trying to convince him that what is happening to women is not right.

Students should read the first two pages of the handout “Why Do They Hate Us?”
Break class into 4 groups. Each group is responsible for reading one of the subsections in the article. They must read it and the boxed area within the section. Reorganize the class so that there are new groups with a representative from each of the original groups. They report what their subsection was about to the group.Lead a wrap-up discussion about why “They hate us…”
