                    Vietnam War


 

What is going on in Vietnam!

     In this unit we will be looking at the Vietnam War from 1945 until our withdrawal agreement in 1972. This unit will have a project in the form of a childrens book. There is a rubric for this assignment and that will need to be followed to be successful. There is also a test on this unit. For the entire unit we will be using our American Journey book (white book).

Introductory Power point (images from the Vietnam War)
Reviewed Vietnam Map
Students work in groups of two to fill in timeline starting on pg 511 in American Journey Book
Discussed the timeline after completion
Vietnam Video and Brief discussion of video
Assign: American Journey p. 584-94  and do the handout: create a chart of advantages/disadvantages the US and VC/NVA & create a chart of views of doves and hawks

Started Children book assignment. Students assigned their own groups (groups of 4).
Use information from ch. 22 sec 2 and rubric to work on book. Worked on this assignment all period.
Assign: Finish Children’s book

Collected children's books. Groups took turns reading the other groups books.
Discussed the books in group and then they were collected
Reviewed the advantages and Disadvantages chart from day 1. Examined the position of the hawks and doves during the war.
Read Vietnam Music and Points of View handouts. Class did questions 1-4 on the last page of the handout and discussed the handouts and questions.
Read p. 592  on the “Tet Offensive”. Talked about the impact of this event politically on America.
Assign:
American Journey Chpt 22 Sec 4  and Biography of Lily Lee and Joan Baez

Listened to some protest music and a transparency of the lyrics from one of the songs.
Review leadership, weapons, VC
Using the terms from the children’s story discussed the role that the Presidents from Eisenhower through Nixon had on the Vietnam war.
Revisited Vietnam timeline to show how Americas role changed in Vietnam
Discussed Nixons strategy in Vietnam and its impact at home and on ending Americas involvement in Vietnam
Discuss the War Powers Act – 1973 – Pres. Could not send troops into action for longer than 60 days without Congressional approval
Do Activity I from PCSS News and Views pages 12-14
Read Fulbright Handout
Review for test
