Unit 1: Lessons Plans

What is going on in World War I!

In this unit we will be looking at the Causes and outcomes of WWI. While doing this unit students will have the opportunity to create a newspaper detailing an aspect of WWI. In addition, there will be a writing assignment, much like the journal entries that you knew from WAHG 1 and 2. There is also a test on this unit, so be prepared.

1/22	Handed out all papers for WWI unit Looked at course syllabus and discussed expectations for class Worked on Map of Europe before WWI number 46 Assign: Read Ch 27 sec 1 (World History Book) and complete chart on the back of WWI study guide Causes of WWI
1/23	Reviewed Chart from last night Causes of WWI, also read and discussed page 14 handout “Conflict in the Balkans: A geographical Problem” and answered the questions Reviewed maps and added Alsace-Lorraine and Balkans to maps Added Alfred T. Mahan and his book into outline of cause Assign:Chpt 27, sec 2 and 3 (World History Book)
1/24	Question for the notebooks: If you were the head of state and your top official was assassinated by a foreign assassin would you hold the country responsible? Discussed this question and looked at the beginning of WWI. Created a timeline of events from the Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand to England entering the War. Reviewed timelines for accuracy. Whose fault is it? Refer to cartoon on p.699 to see what was being said at the time Put up 1914 overhead who was on what side Discuss Schlieffen Plan and how realistic the plan was at the time and what the reality was for Germany
1/25	Draw chart on board of Allies and Central powers. Discussed the World War I Newspaper assignment and went to the library Newspaper Due on Day 6 – but present major ideas tomorrow in class Assign: Chpt 27 sec 4
1/26	Students present the impact/importance of there newspaper topics to class Looked at life in the trenches Discuss WWI quote Students may work to end of period on their projects
1/29	Collect/Hang Newspapers (include rubric) Discuss Major Combatants paper. What did each side bring to the table during WWI Discussed Gallipoli and its importance. Watched video clip from Gallipoli. Discussed the video In notes write the following dates1914, 1917, and 1918. What is there importance? What impact did the US have in entering the War? Discussed American Neutrality at beginning Assign: BRING BOTH BOOKS TOMORROW
1/30	Discussion why America entered the war Read Jeanette Rankin handout and answered questions Read Food Conservation handout Students pair up and work on End of War Handout Assign: Map 1918, Chpt 27 Sec 5
1/31	Review End of War Handout Nov. 11, 1918 at 11am, the armistice was signed in a RR car. Question: What is the difference between armistice and peace treaty? Looked at Wilson’s 14 points and the Treaty of Versailles Overhead of Map showing the boundary changes after WWI Reviewed for Test
