The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires that a "graduation project" be completed by all high school students before graduating. The project mainly consists of the following:
A proposal must be written describing the project, research portion (if applicable), presentation, etc. A Project Propsal form can be found here in Microsoft Word Format
The paper can be either a 5-page research paper on a topic related to the project, or it can be a 3-page narrative about the project. However, if the narrative is done then you cannot get a full commendation on the project. Commendation is simply saying "Very Good Job" and it shows that the student put extra effort into the project. There is commendation for the research paper and for the project/presentation.
The project is what the student actually goes and does. The project is to be a learning experience and a way to apply knowledge gained in school. Projects are usually done by individuals but there can be groups of two or more students.
Some Examples of projects include:
Before the presentation, the student writes a short paragraph describing thier project. This will be given to the panel, as it is easier to look over that than read the proposal.
To a panel of three faculty members, the project is presented. Basically what goes into the presentation is what the project is, what it took to complete the project, benefits of the project, experiences, and any other details that you wish to include about the project. Presentations are usually about 15-30 minutes long, but there is really no time limit.
The presentation can be done junior year, which means that the student(s) can pick their panel. If they wait until senior year (most do), a lottery is done at the beginning of the year for the project dates and the panels are selected for the students.
Students are assigned a faculty member to be their grad project "mentor" for the 4-years of high school. Mentor session is held during resource period on the second tuesday of each month, and the mentor makes sure that everyone is keeping up with handing in their proposal, paragraph, paper, etc. The mentor can also help them come up with ideas for a project.
