Karyotypes MS
Doc.
1) NORMAL KARYOTYPE: Cut out the chromosomes, find the homologous pair,
and tape/glue them in the appropriate position. The answer key has been
given to you to use as a guideline. Make sure to note the number of chromosomes,
sex of the subject, and type of disorder at the bottom of the karyotype
sheet.
2) DISORDER KARYOTYPE: This time there is something wrong
with the chromosomes. You will follow the same procedure as above except
now you may have a missing or an extra chromosome. The possible disorders
you may have are listed below. Match up the chromosomes as best as you
can. Make sure to note the number of chromosomes, sex of the subject,
and type of disorder at the bottom of the karyotype sheet.
POSSIBILITIES:
Turner Syndrome = has only 1 sex chromosome (X)
Klinefelter Syndrome = has an extra sex chromosome (XXY)
XYY = has an extra sex chromosome (XYY)
Down Syndrome = has an extra #21 chromosome (trisomy 21)
3) On the back of your disorder karyotype, write a paragraph (4-5 facts)
describing your disorder.
What causes the disorder?
What symptoms or traits are characteristic of the disorder?
How many people possess this disorder (is it common/rare)?
Find out what you can about the disorder. Etc.
