The department is known as "Special Education". The program is called "Learning Support". The students in this program receive support as they move through four years of the high school curriculum.
Students are mainstreamed as much as possible. If the area, such as math, happens to be difficult for a student, he or she can take Adapted Math with the Learning Support program.
Adapted Classes have been provided for Learning Support students for more than 20 years at Selinsgrove High School. However, these classes never appeared on the "master schedule" until 1989. Before that the teachers would have to handwrite each schedule in August, before school started.
In the 80's there were no text books, just packets were used in these adapted classes. There were no planned courses. Over the years the Learning Support teachers have ordered textbooks, are now on the "master schedule", and have a planned a course for each class the teach.
Today the program greatly helps students get better grades and succeed in high school. However, as with all students, success depends upon the effort made by the student.
