Welcome to Mrs. McEvoy's web page.  I am really excited about our year in 3rd Grade.  We have a lot of great projects and activities planned for the entire year.  Please feel free to view our web page.  If you have any questions I can be reached at school or on the internet.

Marbles for Manners

We have a jar in our classroom and our goal is to fill the jar with two hundred marbles.  We get a marble for each time Mrs. McEvoy catches us using our manners in the classroom.  It is a great way to practice using our manners and encourages us to help each other out.  When we collect all 200 hundred marbles we will have a treat within the next few days.  We could have lunch in the classroom or extended recess time, that will be decided when we reach our goal.  Please help us practice using our manners at home so we can fill our jar faster in school!.

R.A.R.E. Students

R.A.R.E. stands for Responsible and Respectful Everyday. Each month, I will choose one boy and one girl to be Room 116’s R.A.R.E. students. Those who are chosen for this award, receive a certificate and a gift certificate from PTSO for Family Buffet.

Please note, that I will only pick children who are showing responsibility and respect everyday.

Monday Folder

Monday, your child will bring home a “You’ve Got Mail,” folder.  In this folder will be any school information, permission slips, or school work from the previous week.  Each week I ask that you sign the form in the folder and return the folder and signed paper on Tuesday.  If for some reason school is closed on Monday the folders go home the next day school is in session.

Homework Folder

Please check your child’s red homework folder EVERY NIGHT.  I have instructed your child that homework is HIS/ HER responsibility to complete and bring back to school.  However, your support in checking over the assignments for accuracy and completeness would be greatly appreciated.

            Snack Time

Due to the third grade class eating lunch at 12:30 it can make for a very long wait. Therefore, I have scheduled a mid-morning snack time at 10:00.    During this time the students will be either reading silently or listening to me read aloud to them from a chapter book.  I ask that all families participate in the snack donations but understand if your family cannot contribute.  When I see that our snack supply is getting low, I will send a notice home in the “You’ve Got Mail” folder.  Please feel free at anytime to send in a snack. Keep in mind that quick and easy to clean up snacks are best,  such as pretzels or crackers.  Thank you in advance for your help and contributions!

If your child has a food allergy, please let me know.

Curriculum

Math

In math, the students begin the year with a review of additions and subtraction.  We take adding and subtracting to the next level when we learn to add and subtract three and four digit numbers with regrouping.   Then we practice, practice, practice our multiplication and division facts. We, also, learn place values, telling time, measurement, geometry, solving word problems and graphing and organizing data, all of which are important key concepts to prepare us for our 3rd grade PSSA tests.  To help us learn math we complete assignments in our textbooks and on worksheets, play games and use the computer lab.

     Language Arts

We are amazed at all the fun we have learning grammar, mechanics, composition, vocabulary and study skills.  We develop our sentence structure, parts of speech and types of sentences, along with mechanics of punctuation and capitalization.  Throughout the year, we will have the opportunity to express ourselves in written form using original fiction, poetry and research-based reports.

Reading

During reading we read and discuss five themes with each theme having five stories.  We focus on learning reading strategies, comprehension, oral reading, vocabulary development and writing skills.  We take a look at a variety of literature and read chapter books, poetry and factual material.  We will read with a partner, individually and in small groups.

Science

We have a BLAST in science discussing everything from rocks and minerals to the moon and back again.  We discuss matter and its chemical and physical changes and how machines work, along with health and nutrition.  Science is exciting because we do a lot of hands-on/hands-dirty experiments and projects!

Social Studies

Our social studies lessons begin with a unit on maps, globes and map skills.  Most of the year we focus on communities and developing a sense of community in the classroom, the school and our town along with economic development and conserving natural resources.  We learn about Native Americans, colonists and pioneers and how they developed their communities.  We are introduced to a variety of techniques for organizing information such as Venn diagrams, flow charts, graphs and charts.  We create some exciting projects to help us understand the material and motivate us to care about our community.

About the Teacher

My name is Joelle McEvoy and I love teaching third grade!  I grew up in Selinsgrove and graduated from Selinsgrove Area High School.  I earned my teaching degree from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.  After I graduated, I met my husband and had the opportunity to live in a few cool cities.  I have lived outside New York City, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, Ohio.  I have two wonderful children.  My daughter Brooke is in sixth grade at the Selinsgrove Area Middle School and my son Rennan just celebrated his second birthday on August 20th.  Most of my time is spent with my students or my children, but when I have the time I enjoy reading, taking walks and spending time with my family and friends.  My favorite place is the beach, my favorite book is Harry Potter (any one of the books) and my favorite movie is Charlotte's Web.  This will be my fourth year teaching for the Selinsgrove Area School District.  My first year teaching, I taught fifth grade and then I moved to third grade.  Prior to attaining my full time position, I had a long-term substitute teaching position at the Selinsgrove Area Middle School teaching sixth grade math.  I, also, substituted for Mrs. Parker (another third grade teacher) during her maternity leave.  In addition, I taught at Cincinnati Public Schools and assisted students with reading and study skills at Orange County Community College in New York. My goal as an educator is to create an environment that encourages a life long love of learning.
