Mrs. Briggs, 3rd Grade

HOLA!!!

Welcome to ROOM 104'S home page. We are section 3-2. There are 23 students in our class. This year I will be team teaching with Mr. Moll. We are looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled year.

Current Units of Study:

Language Arts - A major component of our Language Arts program is the writing workshop. During this process the students learn the various steps to follow during the writing process . The students will also practice using proofreading symbols everyday during our D.O.L. time. D.O.L. stands for Daily Oral Language, and this activity gives the students the opportunity to proofread sentences and paragraphs every morning. After proofreading, we will work on sentence construction. The students will write persuasive, narrative, journal, and several other creative pieces for their portfolios. Throughout the year they will also practice their grammar skills, and the children will learn how to diagram their sentences. This process will help them identify parts of speech in their sentences. Every week the children will have a journal entry to reflect upon and to write to in their journals. This piece of writing helps to get the children's creative juices flowing.

Reading - Our reading series consists of six themes, and there are several stories for each theme. The series is created to teach the students to become successful, motivated, and confident readers and writers. During each theme there are specific skills that will help the children to become more fluent readers. Our spelling and language arts skills are also integrated into this series. After some of the stories, the children will complete an integrated project. Some of these projects are sent home and some you can see when you visit the classroom. We will have fun with reading!!!!

Social Studies - I will be teaching all the social studies this year. We will begin the year with map skills. The students will learn the different parts of a map and how to read a map. They might even draw a few of their own maps using the skills they learn in this unit. Oh what fun!!!!! Hopefully, we will not get lost when we try to follow the maps we created. We will also discuss the different places/communities in which people live. Do we live in a rural, urban, or suburban community? The students will be able to answer this question very soon.

Math -  Students will perfect their addition and subtraction facts to begin the school year. They will practice their old strategies and learn some new strategies to help improve upon their math skills. Problem solving will also be a major skill practiced in each lesson. We will chart everyone's success with 3 minute drills. I will keep a class record on our wall for all to see. It will be soooo cool to watch our improvement from month to month. We will all love math!!!!

Science - Mr. Moll will be teaching all the science this year. The school year begins with plants and animals. The children will learn that all living things have basic needs and life processes in the environment. They will be able to discuss the similarities and differences between plants and animals. We will conduct many fun experiments to help us learn all about these living things. We will also learn why it is so important to recycle and conserve our resources to help preserve our earth. The students will also discover different types of rocks/minerals. We will also learn about the Solar System and weather. The students will also have fun learning about simple machines. Is a shovel a simple machine? What kind of machine is it? By the end of the year your child will be able to answer these questions.

REMEMBER TO RECYCLE!!!

Student of the Week

Every few weeks I choose a student to be the student of the Week.  We will call the student the "Big Mac." This student is hard-working and dependable in the classroom. The privilege for this student includes sitting in the purple flip-up chair during silent reading time with a friend. At the end of their reign, the student gives a short presentation about himself/herself. The student brings in special items that describe "who they are." Classmates then have time to ask questions.

Big Macs of the Week:

Stay-tuned for upcoming students of the Week.

Congratulations!!!!!

R.A.R.E. Students
Each month two students are chosen as R.A.R.E. students for the school. Rare kids are Responsible And Respectful Everyday. These outstanding students are rewarded with a certificate, a pencil, and a free meal from Amatos Restaurant. A boy and girl are chosen for this honor each month.

Adopt a Classroom

State Farm Insurance is our  "Adopt the Classroom" sponsor for this year. Mr. Chris Kenawell is our contact person for this program. A representative from his office will visit our classroom every third Wednesday of the month to do fun activities with our class. At the end of the year, we go on a field trip to see Mr. Kenawell at work. The children get a tour of his office, have a delicious snack, and play cool math games on his computer. Oh what fun we have at work!!!

Thank you to State Farm Insurance for all the fun activities they share with us throughout the year!!!!!
