Math
Students will begin the year with a review of addition and subtraction. The students' skills will be extended to the addition and subtraction of three and four digit numbers with regrouping. Next, we discover the thrill of multiplication and division. Students will also be learning about place value, time, measurement, geometry, graphing, word problems, and data organization. These concepts will help students further develop the math skills and strategies needed to succeed on the PSSA tests.
Language Arts
In Language Arts, students will improve their grammar skills and vocabulary. We will learn about proper sentence structure, parts of speech, and types of sentences. Students will write in the classroom every day. They will write for different purposes: to entertain, to inform, to persuade, and to give directions. Writing will be integrated into all other subjects.
Reading
Students will be reading a variety of literature within five themes. Each theme has five different stories. The stories provide opportunities to learn new vocabulary, reading skills and strategies, comprehension, fluency, and writing skills.
Spelling
Each week, students will be responsible for 20 spelling words. Each spelling list focuses on one or two spelling patterns. Pre-tests will usually be administered on Thursday. If a student receives a 100% on the pre-test, he or she is exempt from Thursday's spelling homework and Friday's spelling test.
Science
Science is filled with exciting experiments and exploratory activities. Students will be learning about the moon, plants, animals, simple machines, rocks and minerals, health and nutrition, and matter.
Social Studies
Social Studies begins with a unit that teaches essential map reading skills. Communities are emphasized in the following units. We will learn about Native Americans, pilgrims, and pioneers who contributed to a sense of community. Students will develop skills to contribute to our classroom community. Graphic organizers will be frequently utilized to categorize and classify or compare and contrast information.
