Reading: We will be reading many stories this year and further developing reading skills. The focus skills this year are narrative element; prefixes, suffixes, and roots; cause and effect; summarizing; locating information; drawing conclusions; comparing/contrasting; main idea and details; sequencing; author's purpose; elements of nonfiction; fact and opinion; and word relationships. Students will also be working on Strategies Good Readers Use. The strategies your children are learning are the following: Use Decoding/Phonics, Make and Confirm Predictions, Create Mental Images, Self-Question; Summarize; Read Ahead; Read to Clarify; Use Context to Confirm Meaning; Use Text to Confirm Meaning; Use Text Structure and Format; and Adjust Reading Rate.

Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics: The skills that will be reviewed and/or taught will focus on writing better sentences. Students will work on the parts of speech and punctuation.

Journals: Students write in journals two to three times a week. Journal topics may be related to something we are learning, or may be chosen by the students or teacher. Students are encouraged to apply writing skills, spell correctly, and work on developing ideas and use of details.

Poetry: Poetry is taught once a cycle. Students are taught about different forms of poetry. They write poetry and often display their work in the classroom. In addition, all students have a poetry book. In the poetry book students have copies of their poems and poems that we have read in class. At the end of the year each child will have a nice collection of poems.

Go for the Gold: Students should read books and fill out forms for books they read. They get the forms from Mrs. Williamson, the librarian. The forms are an excellent way to help students review narrative elements and write summaries.

Social Studies: Students will be learning about the geography, history and government of Pennsylvania. Mr. McHale teaches this subject.

Math: This year students will be working on problem solving, multiplication, division, measurement,, fractions, decimals,  and time. Students should expect to be given homework daily. Students will need to practice their math facts regularly. A timed test will be given once a month on addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

Science: This year we will be learning about the Cells, Plants, Animals, Water, Weather, Rocks, Earth and Beyond, Matter and Physical Science. There may be projects assigned throughout the year. Students will always be given detail information about the projects that will be shared with their parents. Students will be given an ample amount of time to complete the projects. I also teach science for Mr. McHale's class.
