Spelling

The spelling program is a component of Harcourt Trophies reading series. The focus of this program is to encourage students to transfer correct spelling to their writing in all subject areas. Expect a "spelling packet" for practice at home and a spelling exam to accompany each reading story.

Students will practice language arts skills used to improve their written and oral communication.  Students will be instructed in sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar usage.  Students will develop the skills necessary to write coherent sentences, paragraphs, and essays.  They will be given opportunities to use strategies like story mapping, webbing, time lines, and surveys.  Students will be required to write for entertainment, persuasion, and information.  Students will attain the skills required to create propaganda using facts and opinions.  The major components of this program require the students to work towards becoming proficient in areas such as; following directions, proofreading, research and essay writing as well as, giving oral presentations.
