Mathematics
The math program focuses on refining addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills that have already been attained. These basic skills are the foundation for developing new skills; therefore it is essential that fifth graders have mastered these facts. Reinforcement and regular review of basic number facts continues throughout the year.
The fifth grade program incorporates a strong emphasis on estimation skills used with all mathematical operations. New skills the students will be introduced to and learn about are computing decimals to the thousandths and fractions. Fifth grade math also focuses on the development of problem solving strategies. Students are taught a variety of strategies and how to write explanations to explain the steps used for solving problems. Other components of the math program include analyzing and graphing data, geometry, and probability.
Science
Improving your knowledge of your world will be one of our goals in Science. Fifth grade Science is a study of the environment in which you live. Our major units will be life science, earth science, physical science and health. In the life science unit, we will examine how plants and animals are classified, how they interact, and how they form the biomes that make up our planet. The earth science unit deals with the everyday concept of weather. Weather conditions help answer: Will my game be cancelled?, Will there be school tomorrow?, & more. Physical sciences explore forms of energy such as sound and light. In each unit we will be reading, listening, discussing, observing, experimenting, and/ or using a scientific approach to draw conclusions. In the health unit we will briefly explore various body systems that make up YOU.
