Reading to Learn
We will use the Harcourt Trophies basal reading series which utilizes authentic literature. The reading series exposes the students to a variety of reading genres to develop their comprehension, listening, oral and silent reading skills. To promote and develop independent reading, trade books are used to enhance the curriculum.
Throughout the year students learn strategies to help them become successful readers. These strategies include predicting, inferring, categorizing, classifying, summarizing, and drawing conclusions. Students learn about figurative language, and word skills continue to be developed by focusing on the structural analysis of words as a means of decoding longer words. Students are asked to respond to the various types of literature through writing, media projects and multiple choice assessments.
