Reading . . .
Our reading series is a set of Harcourt Trophies basal reader themed units. Each story is written using authentic literature in a variety of reading genres with trade books to accompany them.
To improve comprehension and fluency, students will be working independently as well as in small and large groups to master reading strategies that will help them be successful readers. A few of the strategies we will be working on are summarizing, making predictions, making inferences, and drawing conclusions.
Each story also provides a list of spelling words that students will be tested on at the end of each story. In addition, comprehension, vocabulary, prefixes/suffixes, and figurative language will be tested on at the end of each story with an open-book test. Students are encouraged to use the strategies and skills that were taught during the reading of the story to help them complete the test successful.
