Reva Herrold--Mrs. Herrold teaches classroom music to grades 3-5. She sees each of her 17 classes twice a cycle for 35 minutes.  Once a cycle she'll meet with an Autistic Support class. Along with the classroom instruction, she directs the fifth grade choirs, fourth grade choir (sections 4-5 through 4-8) and third grade choir (sections 3-5 through 3-9).  She is also the coordinator of the fifth grade musical.

Cheryl Shellenberger--Mrs. Shellenberger also teaches classroom music to grades 3-5. She has eight classes and sees each of them twice a cycle for 35 minutes. This year she will be meeting with the Life Skills class once a cycle.  Along with her general music classes Mrs. Shellenberger directs a fourth grade choir (sections 4-1 through 4-4) and a third grade choir (sections 3-1 through 3-4).  Mrs. Shellenberger is also the instrumental music teacher for fifth graders at the Intermediate school. (see instrumental web page for more information)

Students in the Selinsgrove area school district are able to develop an appreciation and enjoyment for many different kinds of music. Music teachers at all levels use the Kodaly method, to introduce new concepts and to reinforce those already learned. Students at the intermediate level continue the concepts that were taught at the elementary level.  New and more challenging concepts will be presented over the next three years to meet the Pennsylvania Standards.

Music Notes

Grade Three--In third grade students are able to further develop their musical skills. New rhythms and melodic concepts are introduced and reinforced through movement and playing of instruments.

Opera and ballet are introduced in third grade. The story of "Hansel and Gretel" is told through an opera by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The opera is shown in animated form to ease the students into this new concept. Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker" is shown during the holiday season to introduce the students to this form of storytelling.

In third grade the students will be composing their own songs to culminate the bell unit.  Rhythms taught throughout third grade will be used as a starting point for the composition.  Students will be introduced to note reading and tone bells will be used to write the melody.  The students will then take a "field trip" to the computer lab to create their own professional copy of their song using the software, Score Writer.

Grade Four--In grade four students continue to learn new rhythms. In addition they will do a variety of movement activities that strengthen their knowledge of these new and already known rhythms.
Fourth grade students will be given the opportunity to enhance their musical education by learning to play the recorder. They will learn simple songs and note reading that will help prepare them for an instrument in fifth grade.

An opera unit is also taught in fourth grade. The opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian Carlo Menotti is shown in December. Unlike the animated opera in third grade the story is told completely through singing.

As in grade three students in fourth grade will be composing their very own songs. They will be able to show their creativity by using their recorders to write their compositions.

This year students will be introduced to a new type of music call a tone poem. they will be listening to "Danse Macabre" by the French composer Camille Saint-Saens. The song 'tells the story' of Halloween at midnight, by using themes for the different creatures.

Grade Five--In fifth grade the students will broaden their horizons by learning to play keyboard. The unit was piloted during the 1999-2000 school year. It was a success! So Mrs. Herrold and Mrs. Shellenberger re-sequenced the unit during the summer of 2001. It is during this unit that the students will be composing their songs. Through the use of their keyboarding skills they will be adding chords to their melodies. Once again they will be using the computer program 'Score Writer' to add a professional look to their songs.

Students in fifth grade will also be playing the recorder this year. They are perfecting the skills they learned last year in fourth grade. In fifth grade the students will also be square dancing to American composer, Aaron Copeland's 'Hoedown'--a movement from the ballet suite 'Rodeo.' A unit on Beethoven has also been added to the fifth grade curriculum. During this unit they view the video "Beethoven Lives Upstairs" and do research on this famous composer. They will also be adding new and more difficult concepts to their growing knowledge of music.

Choirs-- A variety of musical styles are taught each year through composed 2part and unison selections.  An annual concert is performed for the public during the month of February or March.  Chorus is considered part of the general music curriculum; therefore, all students are automatically involved in chorus.  Chorus only meets once a cycle for 35 minutes.
