    Selinsgrove Area Middle School attempts to provide the eighth grade students with varied yet thorough instruction in writing, grammar, usage, and literature. The eighth grade Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the introduction of various forms of essay writing. Whether the students are learning the narrative, the "how to", the classification essay, or the character analysis, each unit incorporates strong grammar and usage skills.

    In addition to the composition aspect of the curriculum, the eighth graders will also explore various forms of literature.  Particular attention will be given to the novel, Downriver, by Will Hobbs.  During this unit the students will learn to understand and discuss the novel in terms of the elements of literature.  Students will be introduced to literary analysis and produce their first analytical essay.
