Sixth Grade Reading

Sixth grade reading curriculum is based on the assessment anchors which are provided by the Pennsylvania Dept of Education. Some of our areas of focus are: identifying/explaining main ideas and relevant details, summarizing, understanding components within/between texts, drawing inferences and conclusions, recognizing and developing a basic understanding of figurative language, determining author’s purpose as well as genre, and point of view.

Our textbook is entitled Quest and is published by Houghton Mifflin. We will be concentrating on four basic themes: Survival, Unwrapped Ancient Mysteries, Finding Common Ground and Ocean Quest.

In addition, students will be required to have a novel with them at all times in the middle school. This novel will be used for a book project which is required each marking period.
