PHOENIX
Guidelines
1. Students report to cafeteria for snacks and attendance.
· 3:20 – 3:35 (students must stay in the cafeteria – except to use the restroom or locker. No wandering the halls or going outside)
· SU mentors use this time to interact and have fun with students.
· SU Mentors will meet with each student to make sure that they have all required materials. Use this time to send them back to their locker if necessary.
2. When they’re seated in the library, the SU Mentors check their assignment books and help them get started. Help students stay on task. One of our goals is to develop each student’s independence; therefore, the SU Mentors will only help them at the beginning so that they can build confidence in completing an assignment at least partially on their own.
3. When students say that all their work is done the SU Mentors will:
· Have students show his/her mentor completed work. If in locker, accompany student to locker to show work.
· Check the homework hotline for team assignments
· Every student should bring his/her AR/silent reading book to Phoenix. Therefore, the mentor can read with his/her student. Take turns reading pages or paragraphs *15 – 20 minutes is probably maximum for these students.
· Read and study class notes. Most students have math notes and some from other classes as well. Mentors can ask students questions from their student notes and help students to improve note-taking skills (i.e. organization, legibility, completeness)
· Check grade-level folders (in the library) for additional educational activities for students.
· Study Island* – an internet-based program students can use to improve math and/or reading skills. *at the discretion of the supervising teacher
· NO games – except for the last 10 minutes of Phoenix (4:20- 4:30). *Only as a reward for those students who have worked hard and have used their time wisely. Please play educational games (Challenge 24, math dominoes, facts dice, etc). A box of these games will be placed in the library.
The after school study program will meet from
3:30-5:00 PM every Wednesday and Thursday.
