Girls 2005! Changing the Culture for Girls a Tremendous Success

The Ophelia Project hosted its first national conference, Girls 2005! Changing the Culture for Girls, on October 27-28, 2005 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Tampa, Fla.  Nearly 500 total participants with diverse professional backgrounds attended the conference, all with a shared interest in girls’ issues, best practices in girls’ programming, and the latest research in the field.  Major sponsors for the event were the Triad Foundation and Johnson & Johnson, the world’s leading comprehensive manufacturer of health care products and provider of related services.

Nancy Snyderman, M.D., practicing head and neck surgeon, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Johnson & Johnson, and correspondent for ABC News was the conference’s featured keynote speaker, who delivered a presentation titled after her book, Girl In The Mirror: Mothers and Daughters in the Years of Adolescence.

Conference participants hailed from more than 25 states across the country and from several foreign nations, including Canada, New Zealand, Honduras, the Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.

Visit our website for complete conference highlights, including participant resources and photo galleries.

Celebrate National Family Week

National Family Week 2005 will take place from November 20-26 and is made possible through the efforts of The Alliance of Children and Families and the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

National Family Week was started in 1968 by Indianapolis school teacher and administrator, Sam Wiley, who wanted to provide Americans with the opportunity to support strong families. Official legislation was passed to recognize the week of Thanksgiving as National Family Week.

This year's theme is Connections Count, and is focused on creating "positive relationships within and among families, as well as support from community networks and institutions." The Points of Light Foundation has designated Saturday, November 19, 2005 as National Family Volunteer Day, and is "designed to showcase the benefits of families working together, to introduce community service, and to volunteer as a family."

The Ophelia Project encourages you and your loved ones to participate in National Family Week. To learn more about what's happening in your community, click here.
