SEARCH  POLICIES

Locker Searches are Regulated by the Pennsylvania School Code

Chapter 17, Section 12.14

The Pennsylvania School Code states that school authorities may search a student’s locker and seize any illegal materials.  Such materials may be used as evidence against the student in disciplinary proceedings.  Prior to a locker search students shall be notified and given an opportunity to be present.  However, where school authorities have a reasonable suspicion that the locker contains material which would pose a threat to the health, welfare and safety of the students in the school, student lockers may be searched.  Articles used for storage of personal property, including but not limited to, book bags, backpacks, gym bags, purses, etc. may also be searched upon reasonable suspicion that they contain drugs or contraband.

STUDENTS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT LOCKERS ARE THE PROPERTY OF THE

SELINSGROVE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT.  STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE NO

EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY WITH REGARDS TO SCHOOL LOCKERS.

In addition, the Selinsgrove Area School Board policy states that upon reasonable suspicion, students suspected of using, selling, or possessing any illegal materials, will submit to a search in the presence of a principal and / or law enforcement official; refusal may result in a forcible search, in addition to suspension or expulsion.  The use of metal detection equipment may be used during the course of a student search.

We ask that all parents / guardians sign this form and return it to the Middle School for our records.  Your signature does not necessarily mean you agree with the policy, nor shall your signature be used as a waiver of any student rights.  The signature means ONLY that you have read the policy and are aware of its contents.  Absence of a signature will not exclude your child from compliance to the above policy.  Students who do not have a locker search form signed and returned may forfeit the privilege of having a locker assigned to him/her.

Student Section

I have read the Selinsgrove Area School District’s Student Internet and Computer Network Policy (found on page 20 of this handbook), and I agree to follow the rules contained in this policy.  I understand that if I violate the rules, my account can be terminated and I may face other disciplinary measures.

Parent Section

As the parent or legal guardian of the student signing above, I have read the district’s Student Internet and Computer Network Policy and hereby grant permission for my son or daughter to access the Internet.  I understand that the district’s computing resources are for educational purposes.  I also understand that it is impossible for the Selinsgrove Area School District to restrict access to all controversial materials, and I will not hold them responsible for materials acquired in the network.
