Holiday Shoe Boxes
The Special Education Support Staff (a.k.a. paraprofessionals or elves) took on a community project for the 2011 Holiday Season! Our goal was to do something to brighten the holidays of 100 adults in our community who were affected by the Flood of 2011 and/or were experiencing other unfortunate circumstances. The adults were chosen to be the focus of this activity because so many of the efforts during the holiday season are directed to the children in the community. The group decided to make “Holiday Shoeboxes” that were filled with personal items and small luxuries to be distributed to local service organizations for those individuals that would enjoy and appreciate the items. The boxes were stuffed items received through donations from the community, staff, parents and students. Items included in the Holiday Boxes were: shaving cream, fragrance/cologne, combs, brushes, disposable razors, mouthwash, toothpaste, handkerchiefs, deodorant, body wash, manicure sets, nail polish, make-up, disposable cameras, costume accessories, footsies, coupons for local restaurants, hats, gloves, socks, umbrellas, flashlights, tee-shirts (to name a few). Each box was unique and beautifully decorated with lovely Christmas ribbon and an ornament. Although we fell short of our original goal to fill 100 boxes; 70 boxes were delivered to the Red Cross, Haven Ministry, Women in Transition and SunCom Industries in hopes of bringing Holiday cheer for 70 men and women. The staff (referred to as Elves) had an enjoyable time gathering the items and a fun-filled evening of packing and wrapping! To end the evening, the elves shared a covered-dish meal and exchanged stories and holiday traditions. We agreed that 2012 “Holiday Shoeboxes” are a must and the 100 goal will be attained!
Happy New Year from Santa’s Elves!
